9th-Ranked Bobcats Travel to Take on Bearkats

SAN MARCOS, Texas – The first of five consecutive games of on the road begins for 9th-ranked Texas State (20-5) on Tuesday with a trip to Sam Houston (14-10). First pitch is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. at Don Sanders Stadium.
 
The game will be streamed on ESPN+ and live stats will be available.

For the third straight week, Texas State was ranked in all six major polls. The Bobcats achieved their highest ranking ever in Baseball America (#19) and USA Today (#20), maintained the best spot in Collegiate Baseball Newspaper (#9), D1Baseball (#20) and Perfect Game (#20) and dropped two spots in the NCBWA (#23).
 
ABOUT TEXAS STATE
Dalton Shuffield paces Texas State at the plate with a .411 batting average, 37 hits, 32 runs, 23 RBI, 10 stolen bases, eight doubles and two triples. He shares the team lead of six home runs with John Wuthrich, who is hitting .305 with 21 RBI and six doubles. Justin Thompson comes in with a .337 average, 21 runs scored and six stolen bases.
 
Getting the start on the rubber will be Trevis Sundgren. He is 2-2 with a 4.68 ERA and 13 strikeouts over 25 innings.
 
Coming out of the bullpen, Tristan Stivors has recorded seven saves to lead the Sun Belt Conference. The right-hander is also 2-0 record and sports a 0.78 ERA with 31 strikeouts in 23 innings. Matthew Nicholas has made 12 relief appearances and has recorded a 1-0 record and 1.00 ERA.
 
ABOUT SAM HOUSTON
The Bearkats are coming off a series victory over Stephen F. Austin on the road. Sam Houston is 2-3 in midweek games this season with a 1-2 mark at home. The lone home victory was an 11-10 contest over Baylor on Mar. 15. At home, the Bearkats are 10-3 this season.
 
Carlos Contreras leads the team with a .454 average, 47 RBI seven home runs and four triples. Over the final two games against the Lumberjacks and the three-game series against Texas Southern, he recorded six homers and 30 RBI. Justin Wishkoski (.411) is batting over .400 and paces the team with eight doubles while scoring 31 runs and driving in 22. Only other regular batting over .300 is Clayton Chadwick at .367.
 
Right-hander Coltin Atkinson is scheduled to get the ball on Tuesday. He is 2-0 with a 3.45 ERA and 15 strikeouts over 15.2 innings.
 
Lance Lusk has earned three of the team's four saves with the other being picked up by Logan Hewitt (1-1, 7.12 ERA). Lusk sports a 2-0 record, 1.29 ERA and 16 strikeouts in 14 innings spanning 10 appearances. Also pitching in 10 games out of the bullpen has been Gavi Coldiron, who is 1-1 with a 2.84 ERA.
 
SERIES VS. BEARKATS
Texas State holds a slim 53-52 advantage in the all-time series. The Bobcats won the last meeting 5-4 on Feb. 24, 2021 that took place at Globe Life Field in Arlington, Texas. That win snapped a seven-game losing streak for TXST in the series.

When playing the Bearkats on the road, Texas State is 24-23. Last game in Huntsville saw Sam Houston come out on top 8-6 on Mar. 28, 2016. The Bobcats' last victory on the road was Mar. 21, 2020 by a 9-8 score.
