Osterman to throw opening pitch when Bobcats host Longhorns

Texas State to play host to the University of Texas for the first time since April 11, 2018 when the two collide on Wednesday, March 23 at 6 p.m. CT.

SAN MARCOS, TX — Three-time Olympic medalist and former Texas State softball assistant coach Cat Osterman will throw out the game's first pitch when Texas State meets Texas on the diamond of Bobcat Softball Stadium on Wednesday, March 23 at 6 p.m. CT.

Following the ceremonial pitch, Osterman will head to the announcer's booth to join Brant Freeman and call the game's action on ESPN+. Osterman most recently joined Freeman on the broadcast when Texas State (14-12, 2-4) played Baylor on Wednesday, March 16.

Osterman, a Houston native, spent six seasons alongside Texas State softball head coach Ricci Woodard on the Bobcats' coaching staff prior to stepping down on May 11, 2020, to pursue future personal endeavors. During her team working with the program's pitchers, the Bobcat pitching staff posted a collective 2.45 ERA in 2,079.2 innings. At the conclusion of three different seasons, the Texas State pitching staff had a sub-2.00 ERA: 1.72 (2017), 1.81 (2018) and 1.59 (2020*).

*The Texas State pitching staff allowed only 36 earned runs in 158.1 innings pitched, before the remainder of the 2020 NCAA Division I softball season was cancelled on March 12, 2020, by the NCAA due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Texas State earned three NCAA Regional berths (2016, 2017 and 2018) as well as the 2018 Sun Belt Conference regular season and tournament championships with Osterman on the coaching staff.

Osterman was a four-time Big 12 Player of the Year, four-time All-American and three-time USA Softball National Collegiate Player of the Year during her time as a member of the University of Texas softball program (2002-06). As a Longhorn, Osterman appeared in 180 games in four seasons and accumulated a 136-25 record with 2,265 strikeouts and a 0.51 ERA. As a freshman, Osterman pitched the first perfect game in Texas softball history. She'd go on to become the youngest member of the U.S. Olympic team to bring home a gold medal from Athens in 2004.

INSIDE THE SERIES: Texas

Texas State will be looking for its first win over Texas — regardless of site location — since April 11, 2018, when the Bobcats knocked off the Longhorns, 2-1, in front of a Bobcat Softball Stadium record 1,408 fans. No active Bobcat softball student-athlete was on the 2018 squad to knock off the Longhorns.

A win Wednesday night would be the fourth-straight win for Texas State over Texas in games played in San Marcos, Texas. Texas State won, 2-1, on April 11, 2018, then 2-1 in nine innings on April 5, 2017, and 9-5 on March 2, 2016.

Texas holds a 42-14 all-time mark over the Bobcats, including a 14-6 mark against Texas State in games played in San Marcos.

During Cat Osterman's time on the Texas State coaching staff (2015-20), the Bobcats were 5-6 against Texas, including a 3-1 mark in San Marcos.
