Career Day at the Plate for Ramirez

SAN MARCOS, Texas – Redshirt sophomore August Ramirez had a career day at the plate in Texas State's (13-3) 15-5 win over Southern (3-12) Saturday to clinch the series. The catcher finished 3-for-5 with five RBI, a double and home run.

Levi Wells (2-0) threw five scoreless innings with seven strikeouts and allowed just two hits to pick up the win. Christian Davis (0-2) was saddled with the loss after surrendering six runs on seven hits in three innings.

Both Nick Moore and Austin Smith worked an inning of shutout ball and struck out two and one, respectively. Also tossing an inning out of the bullpen was McCray Gann and Victor Loa.

Jose Gonzalez had a 4-for-6 day at the dish with all his hits being singles. He also scored twice and drove in two runs. Finishing with three hits each was Daylan Pena, Dalton Shuffield and Justin Thompson with the later two plating three and two runs, respectively.

The scoring began in the second for the Bobcats as Thompson led off with a single and Pena drew a walk. A 2-2 offering to Ramirez was smashed and landed on the roof of a shed behind the right centerfield wall for his third homer of the season.

In the fourth, TXST doubled its run total with two coming in off a Thompson single and another on a ground out off of Ramirez's bat.

The fifth against saw Texas State double its run total to take a 12-0 advantage. Gonzalez drove in a run on a single through the left side. Two pitches later, Shuffield lined an offering off the left field foul pole for a three-run round tripper. Both Cameron Gibbons and Ramirez would drive in a run apiece to round out the scoring in the frame.

Dylan Kerbow led off the sixth and laced a single through the right side for his first collegiate hit in his first official at-bat in a Bobcat uniform. He would eventually come home on a Cade Manning ground out to increase the advantage to 13-0.

The Jaguars got on the scoreboard in the next half inning on a three-run homer by Jovante Dorris.

Kerbow hit a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the seventh for his first collegiate RBI. Gonzalez added an RBI single in the eighth to wrap up the Bobcats scoring.

Southern tacked on two runs in the ninth as the first three batters reached via TXST miscues.

The series wraps up on Sunday with first pitch scheduled for 1 p.m.
