SAN MARCOS, Texas – Texas State (14-3) hit four home runs Sunday afternoon on its way to defeating Southern (3-13) 9-5 Sunday afternoon at Bobcat Ballpark to complete the weekend sweep. The victory also gave the Bobcats their best start in program history through 17 games.
Â
John Wuthrich hits two homers and both
Justin Thompson and
Wesley Faison had a round tripper apiece. Thompson was also a perfect 3-for-3 at the plate with two runs scored.
Â
Carson Keithley (2-0) threw two scoreless innings out of the bullpen and struck out four to earn the win. Anthony Fidanza (2-1) surrendered five runs on three hits in an inning of relief to take the loss.
Â
Starting on the rubbers was
Tony Robie, who went four innings with three strikeouts but allowed three runs on seven hits.
Cameron Bush and
Tristan Stivors both threw a scoreless inning of relief.
Otto Wofford also worked a frame out of the pen and surrendered two runs with one strikeout.
Â
The Jaguars tallied two runs off four hits in the first. The deficit was short lived as
Isaiah Ortega-Jones walked on four pitches and Wuthrich went the opposite way for his first homer of the afternoon.
Â
Southern saw its first three batters reach in the third with a run eventually coming in on a fielder's choice to put the visitors back ahead 3-2.
Â
The first pitch that Thompson saw to lead off the fourth saw him send it over the right centerfield wall to tie the game.
Â
Dalton Shuffield drew a walk and stole the first of his two bases on the day with one gone in the fifth. A 2-2 pitch to Faison was blasted to left field to put Texas State in the lead. The frame continued with Thompson singling to center and
August Ramirez was plunked.
Daylan Pena sent a 1-2 offering back up the middle for an RBI single. The ball went under the centerfielder's glove, which allowed Thompson to come around to score and the freshman first baseman to reach third.
Â
Pena came a little too far down the line on the pitch and was caught in a rundown. A collision between the Corpus Christi, Texas native and the third baseman after he threw the ball to the catcher resulted in an interference call and tack on the Bobcats' fifth run of the frame.
Â
Wuthrich capped off the scoring for TXST in the next inning when the first pitch he saw was blasted to left field. The ball hit off the left top of the softball field scoreboard and eventually landed on the football practice field.
Â
Two Bobcat miscues in the next half inning allowed the Jaguars to cut the advantage to 9-5. Bush worked around a walk in the eighth and Stivors shut the door in the ninth with two strikeouts.
Â
Next up for Texas State is a Tuesday contest against Prairie View A&M. First pitch is scheduled for 6 p.m. at Bobcat Ballpark.
