SAN MARCOS, Texas – Senior
Wesley Faison smashed a 2-run home run to break a tie in the bottom of the eighth as the Texas State baseball team (1-0) claimed an opening day 5-3 victory over Utah Valley (0-1) Friday night at Bobcat Ballpark. It was the Bobcats' fourth consecutive win in the season opener.
Along with his round tripper, the Richmond, Texas native hit two doubles to finish 3-for-4 at the plate. He also finished with two RBI and scored twice.
Dalton Shuffield finished with an RBI and
Isaiah Ortega-Jones set a career-high with two stolen bases.
Zeke Wood got the ball and put on a dominating performance with a career-high 12 strikeouts in six innings. He limited the Wolverines to one hit as he did not give it up until the first batter of the seventh frame. The right-hander did walk two and surrender two runs in the no decision effort.
Working two scoreless frames of relief with four strikeouts to pick up the win was
Tristan Stivors (1-0). Bobby Voortmeyer (0-1) threw the final 5.1 innings for UVU. He took the loss after giving up Faison's homer while striking out four.
The Bobcats got the scoring going in the second that began with a leadoff double from Faison. He scored after two wild pitches allowed him to advance the final 180 feet.
Peyton Lewis scored on a fielder's choice and Shuffield plated the third and final run of the frame on a groundout to the first baseman.
In the seventh, the Wolverines scored thrice to tie the game.
Jose Gonzalez led off the bottom of the eighth with a single to left field on the first pitch of the frame. His batted ball was nearly caught by the diving outfielder but he ended up trapping it. Three pitches later, Faison smashed a 1-1 offering over the left field fence for the go-ahead runs.
