NEW ORLEANS – After helping lead the Texas State men's basketball team to two victories over the first week of the season,
Mason Harrell was named the Sun Belt Conference's Player of the Week on Monday. It is the first weekly honor in the fifth-year senior's career.
Harrell averaged 18.7 points, 4.7 rebounds and 1.0 steals per game while shooting 44.2% from the field and making 15-of-21 (71.4%) free throw attempts over three games. He netted double-figures and grabbed at least four rebounds in each contest.
The Midwest City, Oklahoma native started the season with a 17-point performance in which he made 5-of-9 shots from the field at Washington State. In the home opener against Mid-America Christian, he also made five field goals on his way to totaling 13 points and grabbed five boards in the victory.
Harrell saved his best for the final game of the week at Rhode Island. The point guard scored 26 points, one off from matching his career-high, as he netted 11 of TXST's final 13 points over the last 4:33 of the game in the 70-66 victory. It was the Bobcats' first-ever win on the road against an Atlantic 10 program.
The senior finished the game going 9-for-18 from the field and converted 7-of-10 attempts from the charity stripe versus the Rams. He also retrieved five rebounds with two coming on the offensive end.
Harrell moved up four spots to 17th on Texas State's career scoring list with his 56-point week. He is now at 1,105 points and needs six more to jump into 15th-place.
This week will see Harrell and the Bobcats faceoff with I-35 rival UTSA for the first time since 2019. Thursday's game in San Antonio is scheduled for a 7 p.m. tip at the Convocation Center
