SAN MARCOS, Texas – Texas State men's basketball head coach
Terrence Johnson announced the signing of Kaden Gumbs, Dontae Horne and Elijah Tate to national letters of intents during the early signing period for the Class of 2023.
"We are super excited about the trio of guards in this class. They all bring something different to the table," said Johnson. "We've had good guards here over the years and I truly believe this group has a chance to make a name for themselves. They possess the characteristics that we value daily; their toughness, skill, feel and competitive nature makes them perfect fits for our program."
Kaden Gumbs | 6-1 | Guard | San Marcos, Texas | San Marcos HS
Gumbs is currently in his senior year at San Marcos High School. The 6-foot, 1-inch point guard is rated a three-star prospect and the 23rd best player in the state of Texas by 247Sports.
In his three years as a Rattler, Gumbs has scored career 1,275 points. Last year saw him average 17 points and 2.8 steals per game. He also dished out six assists per contest to lead the greater Austin area to help lead the team to a 27-10 record.
Gumbs claimed the District 26-6A Defensive MVP award in both his junior and sophomore seasons. As a freshman, he was named to the All-District 26-6A Second Team.
Johnson on Gumbs: "Kaden is a hometown kid that choose to build a legacy here in San Marcos. He's a true point guard that can impact the game in a multitude of ways. His basketball IQ, speed, toughness and diversified skill set makes him a great fit for the Bobcats."
Dontae Horne | 6-4 | Guard | Memphis, Tenn. | Howard College
Horne will have two years to play in a Bobcat uniform when he joins the team next Fall. A 6-foot, 4-inch guard, he is playing this season at Howard College in San Angelo, Texas. The future Bobcat is putting up 8.0 ppg, 2.3 apg, 2.0 rpg and 1.2 spg through six contests. He has made 17-of-39 (43.6%) shot attempts and converted 11-of-14 (78.6%) free throw shots.
The previous two years saw Horne compete at Eastern Oklahoma State College where he averaged 13.5 ppg, 4.7 rpg, 4.5 apg and 2.5 spg over 50 contests. The guard posted 15.3 points per contest on 48.8% shooting and made 35.4% from beyond the arc. The 2020-21 season saw him net 10.7 ppg and make 42.0% of his shot attempts.
Horne prepped at Kirby High School in Memphis.
Johnson on Horne: "Dontae is a dynamic, talented and play making guard who has the ability to score the ball from all three levels. He is a fierce competitor and with his length, skill and toughness will have an instant impact on our program. Dontae just does things you can't teach!"
Elijah Tate | 6-4 | Guard | Baton Rouge, La. | South Plains College
Tate will arrive in San Marcos after playing this year at South Plains College that is in Levelland, Texas. In five games this season, he is putting up 8.6 ppg while shooting 33.3% from the field with 11 made three-pointers. He also comes in grabbing 2.4 rebounds per contest.
The 2021-22 season saw Tate play at UAB where he played in 11 games off the bench. The guard netted 20 points behind five made treys. He also grabbed eight boards, dished out three assists, blocked a shot and recorded one steal as the Blazers reached the NCAA Tournament.
Beginning his collegiate career at Odessa College, the soon to be Bobcat played in 21 games and averaged 9.3 ppg. His best game saw him score 19 points on the road at both Ranger College and Western Texas College.
Tate graduated from Madison Prep Academy in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. As a senior, he put up 15.4 points, 5.3 rebounds and 3.4 assists per contest. He earned All-District 7-4A First Team accolades and was the district's Defensive MVP.
Johnson on Tate: "Elijah brings a level of toughness to our core of talented guards. He is a seasoned guy that's been around and seen it all. His experience, toughness and three-point shooting ability makes us better from day one."
