Bobcats Defeat Southern Behind Five Double-Digit Scorers

SAN MARCOS, Texas – Five players scored in double-figures Wednesday night for Texas State (7-5) in an 86-83 win over Southern (4-6). The victory marked the eighth consecutive victory dating back to last season inside Strahan Arena.

For the second game in-a-row, Mark Drone scored a game-high 23 points. The senior was 8-for-13 from the field, made 3-of-4 three-point attempts and was 4-of-5 at the free throw line. He also had season bests of five assists and five rebounds.

Kaden Gumbs scored a season-high 15 points on 5-of-7 shooting and went 5-for-6 at the charity stripe. He also handed out four assists and recorded three steals. Kyndall Davis finished the night with 14 points, eight rebounds and two blocks.

Contributing 12 points was Makai Willis, who saw half of his points come at the free throw line. Jalen Bolden came off the bench to score 11 points while also recording six rebounds, four assists and three steals.

As a team, the Bobcats were 28-of-54 (51.9%) shooting and knocked down 7-of-17 (41.2%) three-pointers. They turned 19 Jaguar turnovers into 26 points.

The first four points of the game were scored by TXST courtesy of two free throws apiece from Davis and Willis. The Bobcats would lead for the first 13:53 until Fazl Oshodi knocked down one of his six three-pointers on the night during a 12-2 run for Southern to put the visitors in front.

A 12-3 scoring stretch for the Jaguars saw them take their largest lead of the game at 35-26 with 7:23 left in the first half.

Texas State would end the opening half by scoring the last nine points that began with a Bolden three-pointer. Davis capped it off with two free throws to send the game into halftime knotted at 38-38.

Southern scored 10 of the first 13 points coming out of the break to go back in front. The visitors would maintain the advantage until the 8:41 mark. That is when Bolden stole a pass and sent a pass up the court to Gumbs, who laid the ball in to put TXST back in front 67-65.

It was a short-lived advantage as the Jaguars responded with four straight points to retake a two-point lead.

A three-pointer from the right corner by Davis put Texas State back ahead 70-69. The next time down the court, Robert Fields was able to knock the ball away from Malek Abdelgowad. He was unable to corral the ball and had to hit the floor to corral it. Abdelgowad then wrapped him up for a jump ball but refused to let go when the whistle blew. The Jaguar pulled Fields up from the floor and eventually wrestled the ball away from the Bobcat freshman. As he did so, Abdelgowad ended up punching Gumbs in the face. After a review, the refs issued a flagrant 2 foul to Abdelgowad that resulted in him being ejected from the game.

Gumbs would sink both charity stripe attempts and Davis converted a layup on the ensuing possession for a four-point swing for the Bobcats. The team used the momentum to stretch the advantage to 79-71 after Gumbs made a free throw.

A quick 9-2 run by the Jaguars cut the lead to a point with 43 seconds left on the clock. Bolden drove down the baseline and kicked a pass back out to the top of the arc to Davis, who knocked down a trey with 18.1 remaining in the game to extend the lead to 84-80.

Drone would be fouled after grabbing a rebound on a missed three-point attempt with 5.3 showing on the clock. He knocked down both attempts at the free throw line to seal the victory.

Next up for the Bobcats is the Sun Belt Conference opener against Arkansas State. Tip for next Wednesday's game is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
