Texas State returns to the friendly confines to continue Sun Belt action

SAN MARCOS, Texas — The Texas State softball program hasn't played inside Bobcat Softball Stadium since its series finale against South Alabama on Sunday, April 11. That 13-day span will end when the Bobcats host Georgia Southern on Saturday, April 24 as the Bobcats look to bounce back into the win column following its second one-run loss at Texas this season.

Saturday's action will feature a doubleheader starting at 1 p.m. with the second game to follow at 3:30 p.m. The two-day action will conclude on Sunday, April 25 when the two teams play a pre-lunch contest with first pitch scheduled for 11 a.m.

All three contests can be viewed on ESPN+ with Brant Freeman and Cat Osterman on the call.

WHO TO WATCH: Tara Oltmann

Texas State's senior shortstop Tara Oltmann is blazing up several of the program's all-time career list entering this weekend's series. Oltmann sits in third on the career RBI list, fifth on the career batting average list, eighth on the career home run list and is tied with senior first baseman Hailey MacKay to the active career leader in hits with 155. She's also the team's active leader in career stolen bases with 24. The preseason All-Sun Belt Conference selection has had five run-scoring games in her last six appearance, including a two-run single at Texas on Wednesday, April 21 to draw the Bobcats to within a single run in the top of the seventh.

INSIDE THE SERIES: Georgia Southern
  • Texas State and Georgia Southern actually met before the Bobcats joined the Sun Belt Conference as the two teams linked up on April 10, 1999, when TXST earned back-to-back 1-0 victories to sweep the day's doubleheader.
  • Since joining the Sun Belt Conference, Texas State is 12-3 all-time against the Eagles, including 4-2 in games played in San Marcos.
  • Texas State is currently riding an eight-game winning streak over Georgia Southern dating back to April 22, 2017.
  • The last time the two teams met in San Marcos, Texas State swept the Eagles (6-1, 5-4 and 3-0) on March 30-31, 2018.
DOUBLING DOWN ON VANDY

Texas State's sophomore second baseman Sara Vanderford added to her season's double total when the Bobcats traveled to Austin on Wednesday, April 21 to play No. 9 Texas. Vanderford was credited with her 15th double on the season, which moved her into a three-way tie with Kristen Zaleski (2004) and Alex Newton (2009) for the sixth-most doubles in a single season in program history. Vanderford enters this weekend's series one shy of tying Jenna Emery (2009) and Ariel Ortiz (2015, 2017) for third place on the list. Elizabeth Wissel holds the top mark with 19 during the 2001 season.

FIND A WAY ON BASE

Texas State freshman left fielder Hannah Earls has been a constant when it comes to finding a way to reach base successfully. Earls is currently riding a 20-game on-base streak, which is the longest streak — active or not — by a Bobcat this season. Both Tara Oltmann and Sara Vanderford had 17-game on-base streaks throughout this season, while Baylee Lemons recorded a 10-game on-base streak, too. The last time Earls failed to reach base was in the Bobcats' win over BYU on March 11, 2021.
