Box Score LITTLE ROCK, Ark. — Texas State rode a double-digit run during the fourth quarter, but it wasn't enough as Little Rock's second-quarter was enough to propel the Trojans to a 62-51 win Friday night.
Avionne Alexander, who returned to action Friday night after missing Tuesday's game against the Trojans, made an immediate impact when she tied the game on a layup off a Krystan Vornes offensive foul less than a minute and a half into the game. Little Rock attempted to pull away early on the shoulders of Teal Battle, who scored eight of the team's first 10 points of the game.
The Bobcats, however, tied the game just two minutes later following two
Lauryn Thompson free throws and a
Da'Nasia Hood layup.
Hood, again, stepped up when she knocked down a 3-point attempt to give Texas State a one-point lead with two minutes to play in the quarter. Hood extended the Bobcat lead to 15-12 with a jumper off a
Kennedy Taylor assist a minute later. TXST ended the game's first quarter with a 15-14 lead.
Despite a 5-0 run to start the second by Little Rock, Taylor pushed the Bobcats back ahead by the 6:24 mark of the second with a jumper. Taylor, again, gave Texas State a second-quarter lead following a second-chance 3-point shot with 4:52 remaining before halftime. However, the host Trojans responded with 7-0 run to take a 28-23 lead into the locker rooms for halftime.
Thompson, who recorded a double-double against Little Rock earlier in the week, started the third quarter with a second-chance layup when she collected the rebound off a Hood jumper to make it a one-possession game at 28-25. Unfortunately, the Trojans responded with a scoring run to extend its lead to double digits just two minutes later.
The Bobcats, though, began chipping away and eventually made it a one-possession game, again, when Alexander collected a loose ball off a 3-point attempt and drove to rim for a second-chance layup with 4:04 to play in the third.
By the fourth quarter, Little Rock had pushed its lead to 10 at 48-38. The Trojans rode a 13-0 run from the four-second mark of the third until Alexander connected on another jumper with 6:18 remaining in the game. By then, Little Rock had ballooned its lead to 57-38.
With 5:25 remaining, however, Texas State went on a scoring run that was highlighted by two 3-point baskets by freshman guard
Presley Bennett and a second-chance layup by
Keslyn King at the buzzer.
The two teams will wrap up its three-games-in-five-days series on Saturday at 4 p.m.
