SAN MARCOS, Texas - The Texas State men's basketball team returned home with a dominating performance Wednesday night when the Bobcats defeated LeTourneau University 92-47 at Strahan Arena.
Â
The contest was Texas State's first home game after the Bobcats opened the 2021-22 campaign with five games on the road.
Â
"I was certainly proud of our guys," said Texas State head coach
Terrence "TJ" Johnson. "It has been a long two weeks and a long time since we have played in front of friends and family. They were certainly excited."
Â
Starting forward,
Nate Martin scored six of his 10 points in the first eight minutes of the game to help the Bobcats come back and take a 16-15 lead.
Â
Texas State outscored the Yellow Jackets 16-6 in the next six minutes to open a 34-22 lead with 6:26 left to play in the first half.
Â
Then, the Bobcats added an 11-1 run to build their lead to 45-23. LeTourneau didn't get any closer than 20 points the rest of the way as Texas State led 47-27 at halftime.
Â
"I am proud of the way we adjusted and leveled up," said Johnson. "I thought early in the game we played without any goals in mind. We prepared this week to be the best version of ourselves, and for us to do that, we have to keep in mind that there is a common goal, and there is a level of focus and commitment you have to have to achieve that. I am thankful for how the guys locked in the second half, came out, and played Texas State basketball."
Â
The Bobcats opened the second half outscoring the Yellow Jackets 39-4 in the first 12 minutes of the period.
Â
Nighael Ceaser came off the bench to score all of his team-high 12 points in the first half when the Bobcats outscored LeTourneau 42-16 in the paint during the first half. Ceaser finished the game with 10 rebounds to record his first career double-double.
Â
He was one of four Bobcats to finish the game in double figures.
Â
Mason Harrell and
Isiah Small both scored 11 points, and
Nate Martin finished with 10.
Caleb Asberry finished with eight points.
Dylan Dawson scored seven points, while
Davion Coleman added six, and
Darien Jenkins scored five.
Shelby Adams,
Brandon Love, and
Drue Drinnon each scored four points.
Â
Deonte Jackson led LeTourneau with 17 points, but he was the only Yellow Jacket to score in double figures.
Â
Texas State will play their next game on Nov. 30 when the Bobcats travel to Houston and play the Rice Owls at 7 p.m. in Tudor Fieldhouse.
