LAFAYETTE, La. — For the first time this season, the Texas State football program will have the luxury of playing on national television as its football game against Louisiana will be broadcasted on ESPNU at 11 a.m. CT.
Kevin Brown and former University of Georgia quarterback Huston Mason will serve as the game's play by play and analyst, respectively. The combination of
Clint Shields and
Geff Gandy will have the road team's radio broadcast on KTSW (89.9 FM in San Marcos) and The Varsity Network app.
LOOKING AT THE BOBCATS
The Texas State defense is one of the best in the nation in recovering fumbles. Among the 125 FBS football programs with at least one fumble recovery, the Bobcats are credited with eight, which is the ninth most in the country and the most among Sun Belt Conference teams. For comparison, the Louisiana defense has only recovered three fumbles this season.
Seth Keller has provided to be a secret weapon for head coach
Jake Spavital and the Texas State coaching staff this season. Through seven games this season, the sophomore place kicker has scored a team-high 47 points, which included a season-high 10 at Georgia State a week ago. Keller enters Saturday's contest averaging 6.7 points per game, which is the sixth-highest mark in the conference.
Saturday's game at Louisiana matches two of the top four red zone defenses in the Sun Belt Conference. Texas State enters the game ranked 34th in the nation and third in the conference after holding opponents to a 77.4 percent conversion rate in the red zone. Louisiana enters the game ranked fourth in the league with a 79.2 clip.
SCOUTING THE RAGIN' CAJUNS
Under head coach Billy Napier, Louisiana is 15-0 against Sun Belt Conference West Division opponents following last week's 28-27 win at Arkansas State. Against conference foes this season, the Ragin' Cajuns have beaten Georgia Southern (28-20), South Alabama (20-18), App State (41-13) and the Red Wolves.
Louisiana is 34-5 under Napier when scoring more than 20 points in a game. After scoring 41 points against App State, the Ragin' Cajuns are 13-0 when scoring more than 40 points in a contest under Napier.
Since the start of the 2018 season, Louisiana is 13-3 in one-possession games.
SERIES HISTOTY
Texas State will be looking for its first-ever victory over Louisiana since joining the FBS ranks. The Ragin' Cajuns are 8-0 all-time against the Bobcats dating back to the two football programs' first-ever meeting on Oct. 5, 2013.
For the ninth time in 10 games, Texas State and Louisiana will play during the month of October. The earliest meeting in the month came on Oct. 5, 2013, while the latest was Oct. 31, 2020. Saturday's matchup will mark second-latest meeting during the month with Oct. 22, 2016, previously holding the mark. The lone exception in the series history came during the 2019 season when the two teams played on Nov. 2, 2019.
In four games against Louisiana in Lafayette, La., Texas State's offense is averaging 15.25 points, while the Ragin' Cajuns are averaging 38 points a game at home against the Bobcats.
