CORAL SPRINGS, Fla. – Texas State women golfers
Rebecca Reed,
Sasikarn Somboonsup and
Sean Yi Yip were named WGCA All-American Scholars on Monday. It is the most Bobcats to receive the honor since 2014.
It is the third consecutive year that Yip has received the accolade and the second time in Somboonsup's career. Reed is the first TXST freshman to earn the award since Somboonsup in 2017.
In all, 1,401 student-athletes across Division I, II and III schools were honored for their work in the classroom and on the course. The criteria for selection as an All-American Scholar are some of the most stringent in all of college athletics. The minimum cumulative GPA to be considered for the award is 3.50.
Somboonsup led Texas State with a 73.42 scoring average over 24 competitive rounds. Her stroke average was the third lowest among all Sun Belt Conference golfers. She also claimed the lone individual title this past season among the Bobcats, claiming the Jim West Challenge trophy with a 10-under par 206 that saw her shoot a season-low 67 in the final round.
Yip recorded a 74.67 average during the 2019-20 season and competing in all eight events. Three times she was the top Bobcat finisher and twice she finished in the top five of a tournament. The senior tied for fourth at both the season opening Sunflower Invitational and season ending Maryb S. Kauth Invitational.
Reed played in five tournaments this past season on her way to averaging 78.53 strokes per round. The Midland, Texas native shot a season-low 8-over 224 at the Texas State Invitational to open the spring portion of the schedule. She also recorded her lone top 10 finish of the year at the event coming in a tie for seventh.
