Texas State looks to keep winning ways in California

SAN MARCOS, Texas — The Texas State University softball team will play in its third different state in the opening month of the season as the Bobcats travel to California to participate in the Capital Classic this weekend.

Texas State (9-5) will open play at Shea Stadium in Sacramento when the Bobcats play Sacramento State on Friday, Feb. 28 at 4 p.m. CT. The team will skip on over to Davis, Calif., to play Utah State and UC Davis on Saturday, Feb. 29 at 11 a.m. CT and 4 p.m. CT, respectively, at La Rue Field.

Texas State will wrap up the five-game, three-day slate with an 11 a.m. CT game against St. Mary's followed by a 1:30 p.m. CT contest against UC Davis at La Rue Field in Davis, Calif., on Sunday, March 1.

BOBCAT SCRATCHES
  • Texas State is coming off its first win over a nationally-ranked opponent last weekend when the Bobcats knocked off then-No. 17 Minnesota, 3-2, on Friday, Feb. 21. Meagan King earned her third win of the season as she pitched four innings of one-run softball, before Tori McCann earned her first save of the season as she tossed the last three innings and allowed only one run.
  • In the circle, the Texas State pitching staff has a combined 1.80 earned run average in 93.1 innings pitched this season. McCann leads the staff with a 1.58 mark with Dalilha Barrera also having a sub-2 ERA with 1.71. King rounds out the trio of Bobcat pitchers with a 2.12 ERA.
  • Tara Oltmann and Bailee Carter, combined, have 20 of Texas State's 78 hits this season with the duo having 10 hits each. Carter also leads the team with 16 walks, while Oltmann is tied with ArieAnn Bell with 10 runs driven is so far in 2020.
  • Last time out, Texas State snapped a three-game skid with a 2-0 shutout against Tulsa on Sunday, Feb. 23. In the game, Barrera tossed five innings of one-hit softball, while striking out six. McCann earned her second save when she allowed only one hit in the last two innings to shut the door on the game.
  • Among Sun Belt Conference pitchers, McCann and Barrera are one of three pair of pitchers from the same team to be ranked in the top 10 of the Sun Belt in ERA. McCann and Barrera are seventh and eighth, respectively.
  • Texas State, as a team, ranked second in the Sun Belt with its 1.80 staff ERA. Additionally, the Bobcats' .975 fielding percentage is third among SBC teams.
