SAN MARCOS, Texas — The Texas State football team and community were rocked with the news on Wednesday that teammate
Khambrail Winters had been killed. Head Coach
Jake Spavital and the Texas State football team met and decided to play Saturday's final game of the 2020 season.
The Bobcats (2-9, 2-5 in the Sun Belt) look to become the first and only FBS team to complete its 12-game 2020 schedule in November when they host No. 16-ranked Coastal Carolina (8-0, 6-0) at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 27 in Bobcat Stadium. Texas State will have a moment of silence in memory of Winters prior to the game.
ESPN+ will televise the contest with
Brant Freeman (pxp) and Stephen Foster (analyst) describing the action.
Clint Shields,
Geff Gandy, and
Koral Riggs will call the game on KTSW (89.9 FM in San Marcos) and the TuneIn App.
LOOKING AT THE BOBCATS
Following last Saturday's offensive outburst, Texas State looks to win its second straight game and now ranks second in the FBS with 233 first downs accounted for this season. BYU is the only team to have accumulated more as the Cougars have moved the chains 236 times in 2020.
Brady McBride received national and Sun Belt Conference Offensive Player of the Week accolades following his record-setting performance against Arkansas State last Saturday. McBride accounted for career highs in completions (32), passing yards (443), and passing touchdowns (5). He tied a school record with his five passing touchdowns, and his pass yardage was the second-highest total in school history.
Jeremiah Haydel continues to torment opposing teams in multiple phases of the game. The Paul Hornung Award Committee named the receiver/return specialist to this week's Paul Hornung Award Honor Roll following his performance (193 all-purpose yards) against the Red Wolves last Saturday. Haydel leads the FBS with 671 kickoff return yards, and his 14.1 punt return average ranks second among FBS leaders.
Texas State's defense leads the Sun Belt Conference and ranks eighth nationally in fumble recoveries with eight through 11 games in 2020.
Heading into the season's final game, Texas State has rushed for 1,459 yards and 14 touchdowns on 348 attempts. Last season, the Bobcats only totaled 920 yards and eight touchdowns on the ground.
Following his five-touchdown performance a week ago,
Brady McBride has now thrown for 16 touchdowns this season, which ties him with Bradley George (2007) for seventh place on TXST's single-season passing touchdowns list. George holds the school record with 26 in 2008.
SCOUTING THE CHANTICLEERS
No. 16-ranked Coastal Carolina comes to Texas as one of four FBS teams with an undefeated 8-0 record this season. The Chanticleers are off to the best start by a team in Sun Belt history and their best start to a season since joining the FBS ranks in 2017.
Coastal Carolina enters Saturday's game with the second-fewest penalty yards per game at the FBS level with only a 29.12 average. Only Rice has a lower mark with 20.00 penalty yards per game.
The Chanticleers come into this weekend's game, having allowed only 179.4 passing yards per game and 15.09 passing yards per completion. Both marks rank 11th in the country and the best in the SBC.
C.J. Marable ranks eighth in the FBS and leads the Sun Belt with 11 touchdowns scored this season. Through eight games, Marable has five rushing TDs and six touchdown receptions.
Redshirt defensive tackle C.J. Brewer will come to San Marcos as the Sun Belt Conference's reigning Defensive Player of the Week after being credited with a career-high 14 tackles, 3.0 tackles for loss, and 1.5 sacks in the Chants' first-ever win over Appalachian State.
Grayson McCall guides the Chanticleer offense with a 190.5 passing efficiency rating, and 18 touchdown passes to lead the Sun Belt. He is responsible for 140 total points and 20.0 points per game to lead the league in both categories.
