SAN MARCOS, Texas – The tennis season is ready for take-off as Texas State (0-0) gears up to open the spring with two road dual matches. The Bobcats will challenge Sam Houston State (2-1) at 11 a.m. on Sunday, Jan. 26 at the McAdams Tennis Center and then face Stephen F. Austin (1-1) at 11 a.m. on Monday, Jan. 27 at the Schlief Tennis Complex.
SCOUTING TEXAS STATE
Rishona Israel-Lewis is coming off an 11-5 fall season in singles play, including a five-match winning streak.
Hana Kvapilova was 8-4 in singles this past fall and 6-2 in doubles action (3-1 with R. Israel-Lewis and 3-1 with
Alyssa Zayat).
Other standout Bobcats in the fall season was
Andrea Fuchs who posted an 8-3 record in singles and
Renata Gonzalez who caught fire late, ending the fall on a five-match winning streak to bring her record to 5-5.
SCOUTING SAM HOUSTON STATE
Sam Houston State is 2-0 at home this season after picking up its first sweep this spring against UTRGV on Friday, Jan. 24. The Bearkats topped Prairie View A&M 6-1 in their season opener (Jan. 18) and suffered their first loss at No. 18 Texas A&M, 5-2 (Jan. 19).
Junior Sahaja Yamalapalli and freshman Emma Goedkoop lead the Bearkats with 3-0 records in singles No. 1 and No. 6, respectively.
SCOUTING STEPHEN F. AUSTIN
SFA will enter the weekend 1-1 but will play two matches on Saturday, Jan. 25 vs. UTRGV and Alcorn State before facing the Bobcats on Jan. 27. After dropping an 7-0 decision at North Texas to kick-off the spring (Jan. 17), the Ladyjacks swept New Mexico State in Denton, Texas on Jan. 18 for their first win this season. This weekend will be SFA's home opening weekend and will play its next five matches at the Schlief Tennis Complex.
