Westward Bound as Soccer Faces New Mexico State and UTEP on the Road

SAN MARCOS, Texas – For the first time this season the Texas State soccer team (4-0) plays both matches of a weekend away from home with a trip westward. The Bobcats start off the trip at UTEP (1-1-2) on Friday at 8 p.m. CT at the University Field and follow with a Sunday contest at 2 p.m. CT against New Mexico State (1-2-1) at the NM State Soccer Athletic Complex.

Live stats will be available for both matches while a video stream will only be available for the UTEP contest.

Last Weekend: The Bobcats took down I-35 rival UTSA on the road 1-0 last Friday on a 12 minute goal by Kaylee Davis. She flicked in a free kick from Sarah Everett from six yards out for the lone score of the match.

TXST followed with a 2-1 overtime win over Houston Baptist at home during the team's annual Teal Match. Davis netted both goals from the penalty spot, becoming the first player in program history to make multiple penalty kicks in a match. Heather Martin made six saves on the night between the posts.

Sun Belt POTW: Both Davis and Martin were named the Sun Belt Conference's Offensive and Defensive Players of the Week, respectively. Davis shared this week's accolade with South Alabama's Briana Morris. It was also the fifth time in Davis' career she has picked up the weekly award. For Martin, it was her seventh career weekly honor after receiving it three times the previous two seasons. The awards are the 15th and 16th for Texas State since the start of the 2016 season, the most in the conference.

National Recognition: At the beginning of August, Davis was named to the MAC Hermann Trophy Watch List. The award is given to the most outstanding male and female soccer player each year. The Allen, Texas native is the first Texas State player ever to be selected to the watch list and first women's Sun Belt honoree since 2011. She was also ranked No. 88 on Top Drawer Soccer's Preseason National Top 100 that was released on Aug. 21.

Scouting UTEP: The Miners come into Friday's match 1-1-2 on the season after defeating Grand Canyon 2-1 and playing to a scoreless draw at UT Rio Grande Valley last weekend. The opening weekend of the season saw UTEP fall 2-1 to Abilene Christian and play to a 2-2 draw against Wyoming.

Danielle Carreon leads the Miners with two goals and five points, and is second with eight shot attempts. Also finding the back of the net has been Lauren Crenshaw, Kori Lewis and Jojo Ngongo. Coming in with a team-high three assists is Tessa Carlin.
