TXST defeats Texas Southern, falls to Houston

HOUSTON – The Texas State softball team (8-8) defeated the Texas Southern Tigers (1-9) by a score of 7-3 before falling in five innings to the host Houston Cougars (13-5), 10-0, on Friday at Cougar Softball Stadium.

GAME 1 – TXST 7, TSU 3
KEY MOMENTS

- Sophomore infielder ArieAnn Bell gave the Bobcats an early 2-1 lead after a solo home run to right center in the bottom half of the second inning.
- Junior catcher Haleigh Davis extended the Bobcat lead to 3-1 in the bottom of the fifth inning with an RBI single up the middle.
- With two on and two out in the top of the sixth inning, freshman catcher Ashlyn Taylor of Texas Southern drove a two-RBI double to left center. The runs scored knotted the game at 3-3.
- In a pinch-hitting role, freshman Jordyn Smith delivered the go-ahead run in the bottom of the sixth inning. Sophomore infielder Tara Oltmann put an exclamation mark on the inning with a three-run homer to center.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
- Senior pitcher Krista Jacobs (0-0) recorded a career-long outing of 5.2 innings. She allowed three earned runs on eight hits and a walk. Jacobs struck out one Tiger batter.
- Junior outfielder Christiana McDowell continued her hot start to the 2019 season. She went 3-for-4 at the plate with a run scored.
- Oltmann led the offensive charge with a 2-for-3 effort at the dish. She drove in three and scored a pair of runs.
- Davis gave the Bobcats three hitters with multiple hits as she went 2-for-3 with one RBI.

NOTABLES
- Bell's second-inning blast was her fourth of the season in her first 37 appearances at the plate. She finished the 2018 season with just one home run in 38 plate appearances.
- Sophomore pitcher Meagan King (3-5) earned her third win of the season in a relief effort. She tossed 1.1 innings of shutout ball and added a pair of strikeouts in the victory.

GAME 2 – UH 10, TXST 0
KEY MOMENTS

- The Houston offense boasted a pair of big innings. The Cougars scored three in the bottom of the second inning before exploding for seven runs in the third. Texas State has given up three-plus runs in 12 different innings this season, including three innings with at least five runs allowed.
- Texas State left five runners on base, including two each in the final two innings of the game.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
- Junior pitcher Dalilah Barrera (5-2) struggled to keep control and was removed from the game after allowing 10 earned runs on 11 hits and two walks in 2.2 innings of work.
- The Bobcats managed just one hit in the game, a pinch-hit single from Smith to open the top of the fourth inning.

NOTABLES
- Texas State has coughed up double-digit runs to opposing teams in three games during the 2019 campaign. In the last two seasons combined, TXST has allowed 10-plus runs in a game just three times.
- Houston entered the game red-hot on the offensive side of the plate. In the six games prior to the TXST matchup, the Cougars averaged 8.5 runs per contest and won four by run-rule.

ON DECK
- The Bobcats will be right back on the field as part of the 2019 Red & White Showcase. TXST will take on Wichita State (11:30 a.m.) and DePaul (2 p.m.) on day two of the tournament. The third and final day of the tournament will feature Texas State against Houston at 2 p.m. from Cougar Softball Stadium.
