SAN MARCOS, Texas – The Texas State soccer team is back on the road this weekend with two Sun Belt Conference matches. First up on the trip is Louisiana on Friday at 7 p.m. at the Ragin' Cajun Soccer/Track Complex followed by a Sunday contest at 1 p.m. against preseason favorite South Alabama at The Cage.
Heading into the weekend, both the Bobcats and Jaguars are 3-5-0 on the season and 1-0-0 in conference play while the Ragin' Cajuns are 1-6-1 overall and 0-1-0 in the Sun Belt.
TXST opened conference action with a 4-0 victory on Friday against ULM at home that was also the program's third annual Teal Match. Twice finding the back of the net was
Kaylee Davis. Her performance helped earn her Sun Belt Offensive Player of the Week honors for the second straight week. She leads the conference with 32 shots and is second with five goals.
Jordan Kondikoff remains the only other Bobcat to score multiple goals (2) and attempt double-digit shots (14) this season. The Mesquite, Texas native shares the team lead of two assists with
Renny Moore and
Mackenzie Smith.
Between the posts,
Heather Martin recorded her second shutout of the season against the Warhawks and lowered her GAA to 0.67. She has also made 26 saves and sports a .897 save percentage.
Kathryn Budde enters the weekend with a 1.65 GAA, .727 save percentage and 16 stops.
Scouting Louisiana
Louisiana fell 1-0 at Troy to open Sun Belt play Friday. The Ragin' Cajuns were scheduled to play at Georgia Southern on Sunday but the match was postponed because of Hurricane Florence. UL is on a four-match losing streak with all of them coming on the road. When playing at home, the Cajuns are 1-0-2 with a victory over Northwestern State and draws against Sam Houston State and Southeastern Louisiana.
Una Einarsdottir, Sarah Kozlowski, Gwen Mummert and Lexi Turner have scored a goal apiece to pace UL. Leading the team with an assist is Grace Champagne, Erika Sierra, Telly Vunipola and Turner. Savanna Young has taken a team best 14 shots.
In goal, Mackenzie Lee has started five contests with her last appearance being Sept. 7 versus Tulsa. She has a 2.49 GAA, .667 save percentage, 26 saves and the program's lone shutout of the year. Victoria Ryn has made four starts between the posts and comes into Friday with a 2.13 GAA, .679 save percentage and 19 stops.
Series vs. Ragin' Cajuns
Texas States is 5-1-0 all-time against Louisiana and has won four straight. Last season saw the Bobcats win 3-0 with goals from
Rachel Grout,
Kassi Hormuth and Moore. The last time the teams met in Lafayette, Louisiana was Sept. 30, 2016. That day saw TXST win 2-1 in overtime with the match tying goal coming from Grout's corner kick attempt that went into the back of the net in the 88
th minute.
The Cajuns lone victory in the series came on Oct. 18, 2013 by the score of 5-2. The first meeting between the teams was a non-conference matchup on Sept. 22, 2000 that TXST won 9-0, tied for the third largest margin of victory in Bobcat history. When playing at UL, Texas State is 2-1-0 all-time.
Scouting South Alabama
South Alabama, the five-time defending Sun Belt champions, began Sun Belt action with a 1-0 road win against Georgia State on Sunday. The Jaguars scheduled matched on Friday at Appalachian State was postponed because of Hurricane Florence. The win snapped a five-match losing streak in which all of the defeats were to programs from the ACC and SEC. USA is 1-3-0 at home this season with the lone victory being a 6-1 match against Chattanooga in which the Mocs played down a woman for the final 70 minutes.
Leading the Jaguars with two goals is Hannah Godfrey, Brenna McPartlan and Moa Ohman. Coming in with a team-high two assists are Anita Agustsdottir and Ana Helmert. Ohman has taken a team-high 19 shots and both Helmert and McPartlan have attempted 14 apiece.
Justice Stanford is the long goalkeeper to see action this season. She has given up 14 goals for a 1.75 GAA while making 40 saves for a .741 save percentage.
Series vs. Jaguars
The Jaguars enter the match with a 5-0-1 series advantage over the Bobcats. The lone tie came in TXST's first-ever Sun Belt match by a 2-2 score on Sept. 27, 2013. Last season saw the Bobcats fall 2-0 at home on Senior Day. The last time the teams met in Mobile was a 2-1 defeat for Texas State.
