Texas State Upends UTSA, 5-1

SAN MARCOS, Texas – The Texas State softball team (36-10, 15-2 SBC) took down archrival UTSA (18-25, 6-12 C-USA) for the second time this season, defeating the Roadrunners by a score of 5-1 on Tuesday evening at Bobcat Softball Stadium.

Texas State wasted little time offensively, scoring the game's first run in the bottom of the first inning. Mari Cranek was hit by a pitch on a full count. Two pitches later, Hailey MacKay drove a double into the right field gap. Cranek raced around the bases, scoring without a throw to put the Bobcats up 1-0.

In the bottom of the second inning, the Bobcats scored four runs on four hits to put the game out of reach for UTSA. Jaelyn Young floated a double off the outstretched arm of the right fielder to give TXST a runner in scoring position with one out. Christiana McDowell bounced a sharply hit single up the middle to score Young from second. McDowell advanced to second on the throw from the Roadrunner outfield. The next Bobcat batter, Jaclyn Molenaar laced a triple to right center field, plating McDowell from second base. With Molenaar on third, Cranek laid down a perfectly executed sacrifice bunt, scoring Molenaar on a fielder's choice. Finally, Ariel Ortiz singled to center field with two away in the inning, scoring Cranek from second base.

In total, the Bobcat offense combined for 10 hits, including two each from MacKay, Ortiz and McDowell. Of Texas State's 10 hits, seven came with runners on base and five were recorded with runners in scoring position.

In the circle, McKenna Fryar started the game for the Bobcats. She lasted 3.0 innings, allowed two hits, one walk and UTSA's lone run of the ballgame. She struck out a pair of batters before giving way to Meagan King. The freshman closed the game out, pitching the final four frames, allowing two hits and striking out a career-best five batters.

Next up, Texas State will hit the road for the team's final road conference series of the 2018 season. The Bobcats will take on the Troy Trojans in a three-game set beginning with a doubleheader on Saturday. Game one is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m. with game two immediately following. The final game of the weekend will start at noon on Sunday from the Troy Softball Complex.
