Women's Tennis Splits Two Road Matches At UTSA and UIW

SAN ANTONIO – The Texas State women's tennis team recorded its first road win of the season and second victory in its last three matches when the Bobcats defeated Incarnate Word, 4-3, on Sunday afternoon at the Mabry Tennis Center.
 
Texas State grabbed an early 1-0 lead after the Bobcats won two of the three doubles matches to capture the team doubles point. First, Sofia Murcia-Rodriguez and Joy Chia Ming Ming combined to win a 6-1 decision on the No. 3 court. Ana Perez and Julia Navajo-Melendez teamed up to beat Rachel Sadiq and Sara Djurdjevic by a score of 7-6 after winning the tiebreaker point, 6-4.
 
The top seeded match was stopped with Rishona Israel-Lewis and Alex Jones tied at 5-5 against Matea Zemunik and Victoria Kareh in the top seeded match.
 
Texas State increased its lead to 2-0 when Alex Jones won a 6-3, 6-2 decision against Sara Djurdjevic in the No. 4 singles match.
 
UIW scored its first point when Victoria Kareh edged Julia Navajo-Melendez in the No. 3 singles match.
 
The Bobcats increased their lead to 3-1 when Rishona Israel-Lewis beat Jelena Dordan in straight sets by a score of 7-5, 6-3 on the No. 2 court.
 
UIW fought back to tie the score when Andrea Fuchs fell 7-5, 6-4 against Rachel Sadiq in the No. 6 match and Ana Perez suffered a three-set loss (6-3, 3-6, 6-2) against Matea Zemunik in the No. 1 singles match. Joy Chia Ming Ming clinched the victory for the Bobcats when she defeated Alejandra Landaluce by a score of 6-3, 2-6, 6-1 in the No. 5 match.
 
The victory came after the Bobcats dropped a 4-0 decision at UTSA on Sunday morning at the UTSA Tennis Center. The Bobcats fell behind early after losing two of the three doubles matches and surrendered the doubles point to the Roadrunners.
 
First, Alex Jones and Rishona Israel-Lewis suffered a 6-4 setback against Kylee Kato and Diya Menon in the top-seeded match
 
The Bobcats evened the score at 1-1 when Ana Perez and Julia Navajo-Melendez defeated Sonia Madronal and Laura Cabrera on the No. 2 court.
 
UTSA clinched the doubles point when Texas State's Joy Chia Ming Ming and Sofia Murcia-Rodriguez lost a tiebreaker, 7-3, to give a 7-6 victory to Ivana Ilic and Charleen Tiwari on the No. 3 court.
 
The Roadrunners clinched the victory with three wins in singles matches. Rishona Israel-Lewis suffered a 3-6, 6-2, 6-1 loss against Laura Cabrera in the No. 2 match. Alex Jones also suffered a 6-3, 6-2 setback against Charleen Tiwari in the No. 4 match. The final loss came when Joy Chia Ming Ming dropped a 7-5, 6-2 decision on the No. 5 court.
 
Texas State has a 2-8 record this season after splitting the two matches on Sunday. The Bobcats will travel to California for a pair of matches against San Diego and CSUN (Cal State Northridge) on March 15-16.
