FOLEY, Ala. – The Texas State soccer team faces off with the five-time defending tournament champions South Alabama on Friday at 4 p.m. in the Sun Belt Conference Championship. The match will take place at the Foley Sports Complex and will be streamed on ESPN+.
Coming into the match, the Bobcats are 11-5-2 overall and are undefeated in their last 11 matches. The Jaguars have an 8-9-1 record on the season and won 16 consecutive contests in the Sun Belt Championship.
Last Time Out
On Wednesday, TXST defeated Troy 1-0 to snap a three-match conference tournament losing streak.
Kaylee Davis scored the lone goal of the match when she headed in a cross from
Genesis Turman in the 63
rd minute. Also assisting on the play was
Haley Groff. In goal,
Heather Martin had to make just two saves to record her eighth shutout of the year.
Davis comes into Friday having scored a Sun Belt leading 17 goals. Her total is tied for the third most in the nation. She is one goal away from tying the Bobcat season record set by Britney Curry in 2009. With two goals, the Allen, Texas native will not only break the program mark but also move into the top 10 in conference history for a single-season.
Turman's five assists are tied for the TXST with fellow junior
Jordan Kondikoff.
Mackenzie Smith comes into the match with four assists and both
Renny Moore and Groff have contributed with three assists apiece.
Martin has been dominate between the posts this season for the Bobcats. Having not allowed more than one goal in any of her 17 appearances, the junior enters Friday with a 0.46 GAA, 79 saves and .919 save percentage.
Scouting South Alabama
South Alabama advanced to the semifinals with a 3-0 win over Appalachian State in the first match of this year's championship. Against Sun Belt opponents, the Jaguars are 6-0 when they shutout opponents and 0-4-1 when allowing a goal. The lone tie was a 1-1 draw on Oct. 19 at home against Louisiana.
Breanna McPartlan, the Sun Belt Freshman of the Year, leads USA in goals (5), assists (4), points (14), shots (62) and shots on goal (33). Four of her five goals have come on set pieces.
Tallying three goals apiece has been Morgan Cross, Hannah Godfrey, Briana Morris and Moa Ohman. Godfrey and Morris have two assists to their names with both of Morris' assists coming in Wednesday match. Also with two assists on the season are Anita Agustsdottir and Ana Helmert.
Justice Stanford has started all 18 matches in goal. She has surrendered 20 goals for a 1.09 GAA while making 79 saves for a .789 save percentage.
Series vs. Jaguars
South Alabama leads the all-time series over Texas State 5-1-1. In the regular season meeting, the Bobcats won 1-0 after Davis scored early in the 10
th minute for their first-ever win over the Jaguars. Prior to this season, USA had won the previous four contests.
Friday will be the first meeting between the programs in the Sun Belt Championship and at a neutral site. When playing the Jaguars in the state of Alabama, TXST is 1-3-1.
