SAN MARCOS, Texas – The Texas State's women's golf team finished sixth in a 15-team field as hosts of the Jim West Challenge with a three-round score of 297+278+296=871 (+7). One day after securing the program-record for a single-round score (278), the Bobcats sealed the successful weekend with victories over No. 21 Miami (Fla.), No. 34 Texas Tech and No. 50 Texas A&M.
The tournament marks the best vs.-par finish that Texas State has played and the first time the Bobcats have triumphed over multiple top-50 nationally ranked programs under head coach
Lisa Strom.
TCU came away from the weekend with the overall team victory. The Horned Frogs posted a three-round score of 284+283+286=853 (-11) to hold on for the win. Florida State finished second in the team standings, just one stroke behind the champions at 291+281+282=854 (-12). The Seminoles were led by individual champion Frida Kinhult, who finished the tournament at -14 (71+65+66=202).
"At the beginning of the week I said I wanted to finish our fall season on a high note and we did just that," head women's golf coach
Lisa Strom said. "Setting a team record and beating the No. 21, No. 34 and No. 50 teams in the country is very satisfying. These ladies are starting to get a glimpse of their potential and I am excited to get to work this offseason to come out of the gates fast as we host the Texas State Invitational."
"I am so grateful for the support of Jim and Carol West as well as Mike and Dianne Bowman," Strom said. "The event was the best one yet. Having it at Kissing Tree Golf Club certainly gave us a ton of support from the people of San Marcos. Having our staff and administration out there as volunteers and cheering on the team made it special as well. We look forward to hosting the event again next year!"
