SAN MARCOS, Texas – The Texas State University women's golf program is dedicating the 2018-19 season to former Texas State graduate student Darryn Deen Andrews, a United States Army 2nd Lieutenant killed after his unit was ambushed while serving in Pakitika Province, Afghanistan on Sept. 4, 2009.
"As we are developing young student-athletes to be leaders on and off the course, I do not know a better example of servant leadership than 2nd Lt Andrews," head women's golf coach
Lisa Strom said. "By putting the lives of others ahead of his own, Darryn paid the ultimate sacrifice for the freedoms we enjoy. Our team will proudly carry a bag in his honor at each tournament throughout the 2018-19 season as a reminder that putting others ahead of ourselves is a character trait of a great team. We will look for ways to put that idea into action as a team on the course, in the classroom, and in the community that would make Darryn, a Bobcat alum, proud."
The Bobcats will honor Andrews, a Silver Star, Bronze Star, Purple Heart, Afghanistan Campaign Medal, Combat Infantryman Badge, Parachutist Badge and Texas Legislative Medal of Honor recipient, through the Folds of Honor Military Tribute Program.
The Silver Star Medal is the third highest military decoration for valor that can be awarded to any person serving in any capacity with the United States Armed Forces. The medal is awarded for gallantry in action against an enemy of the United States.
Lt. Andrews is survived by his wife Julie, son Daylan and daughter Jacey. Julie was pregnant with Jacey when Darryn was killed. She was born three months after Andrews died.
"We are so grateful and honored that Darryn is being remembered through the Folds of Honor Military Tribute Program," Julie said. "Darryn was such a special person that impacted many lives, not only through his military service, but as a teacher, coach and friend. We miss him and think about him every single day and knowing that others think about him too is so very comforting to us. Thank you, to Folds of Honor, and to the Texas State women's golf program, for keeping our hero's memory alive, and for never forgetting his sacrifice."
Throughout the season the Bobcats' golf bag will carry Andrews' name and branch of service along with a story card that provides background information on the Texas State alum. At the end of the season, the Texas State women's golf team will auction off the bag. All proceeds from the auction will go directly to the Folds of Honor Military Tribute Program.
