The Texas State football team closes out the 2017 season on Friday, Nov. 24, when the Bobcats travel to Troy, Ala. for a Sun Belt Conference game against Troy at Veterans Memorial Stadium. The game kicks off at 3 p.m. and will be televised on ESPN 3 with Brett Dolan and Ken Dunek describing the action.
Â
The game can also be heard on 1300 the Zone in Austin, AM 1160 in San Antonio and FM 89.9 in San Marcos with
Brant Freeman, Ben Campos and Megan Trammell calling the action.
Â
The Bobcats (2-9, 1-6 in SBC) are coming off a 30-12 loss at Arkansas State in a game that was highly competitive with Texas State trailing 16-12 midway through the third quarter. Texas State also dropped a 33-30 decision against Georgia State in its final home game.
Â
Meanwhile, Troy is coming off a bye-week after winning 19 of its last 24 games. The Trojans enter the game with an 8-2 record and sit in four-way tie with Arkansas State, Georgia State and Appalachian State atop the Sun Belt standings with a 5-1 league mark.
Â
Friday's game will feature seniors on both teams taking center stage as Troy will have 22 seniors playing in their final home game and Texas State has seven seniors and one graduate transfer playing in their final collegiate game.
Â
Texas State's seniors who are playing on Saturday include captains
Easy Anyama,
Gabe Loyd and
Gabe Schrade, wide receivers
Elijah King and
Eric Luna, safety
Stephan Johnson, tight end
Chris French and running back
Jordan Versey.
Â
"My hat goes off to those guys," said Texas State head coach
Everett Withers. "They have done everything we could have asked of them to do during the past 19 months. I told them (in the locker room following the Georgia State game) that when we start winning, and I said when, and start competing for the Sun Belt, it will be because of you guys."
Â
Loyd and Schrade have been leading the team throughout that span, having served as team captains during the last two years. Loyd, who was named a semifinalist for the National Football Foundation's Scholar-Athlete of the Year, averages 7.4 tackles per game and leads the Bobcats with 4.5 sacks and has 10.0 tackles for loss.
Â
Schrade, who was nominated for the Wuerffel Trophy earlier this year, has 25 receptions for 286 yards and two touchdowns overall this season.
Â
Anyama was named team captain this year and tallied a career-best seven tackles at Arkansas State while playing defensive end. Anyama, ranks 15th among Sun Belt Conference leaders with 4.0 sacks and has 35 tackles overall this year after sitting out most of last season with an Achilles injury.
Â
Elijah King leads the team with 46 receptions for 641 yards and three touchdowns. Luna has caught seven passes for 56 yards and a TD during the past four games after battling back from knee surgery.
Â
Johnson enters the Troy game with 29 tackles this season after logging seven during the past two weeks. He has started nine straight games.
Â
French has caught five passes for 46 yards and one touchdown during the past two games against Georgia State and Arkansas State. Versey has played primarily on special teams after moving to running back in August.
Â
Those players will be joined by graduate transfer
Damian Williams who has started every game this season at quarterback. He has completed 182 of 316 passes for 1,925 yards and 12 touchdowns. He also has rushed for four touchdowns.
Â
Two other seniors are not playing on Friday. They include defensive end
Jeff Banks, who played in five games before suffering a concussion this year, and
Louis Rubin, who is a former walk-on linebacker who earned a scholarship in 2016 after serving in the U.S. Army.
"If you go by and ask every coach out here the seniors will remember this week for the rest of their lives, even though they may forget some of the other stuff," said Texas State assistant head coach and defensive coordinator
Randall McCray.
Â
"They have great character to be able to put up with the things we put them through, then go through some tough times and adversity, but still come and work every day, said co-offensive coordinator
Parker Fleming. "When you walk out onto the field and people tell you that you sure do play hard and are a lot better. That says a lot about our senior class in that they bought into something that they can carry for the rest of their lives."
