MIAMI, Fla. - The Texas State women's tennis team picked up a pair of singles victories in the final round of the FIU Invitational on Sunday morning at the Crandon Tennis Center.
Ana Perez won the consolation final match in the No. 1 singles bracket and
Rishona Israel-Lewis won a third-place match in the No. 2 singles bracket.
Perez defeated Drake's Tess Herder by a score of 6-0, 6-4, while Israel Lewis won a three-set decision over Herder's teammate, Joely Lomas,4-6, 7-6 (3), 10-4.
Sofia Murcia-Rodriguez and
Andrea Fuchs also reached consolation final matches as Fuchs dropped a 6-4, 6-4 decision against Eva Nykos of North Florida in the No. 3 bracket and Murcia-Rodriguez dropped a hard-fought three-set decision (6-4, 5-7, 10-6) against Mela Jaglarz of Drake in the No. 4 bracket.
In addition to the singles matches, Perez also teamed with
Julia Navajo-Melendez to finish as the runner-up in No. 1 doubles after falling, 6-3, against FIU's Mina Markovic and Ulyana Gribb.
Israel-Lewis and
Alex Jones also fell, 6-3, in the No. 1 consolation final against North Florida's Kinga Gartner and Irina Karangozishvili.
In the No. 2 doubles bracket
Joy Chia Ming Ming and Murcia-Rodriguez fell in a semifinals match against FIU's Maryna Veksler and Nerma Caluk by a score of 6-2.
Fuchs and
Flavia Gutierrez-Balcazar also suffered a 6-2 loss against a doubles team comprised of
Lucia Montano of North Florida and Drake's Mela Jaglarz in a No. 2 consolation semifinals match.
