SAN MARCOS, Texas - The Texas State women's tennis team combined for 19 victories at its annual Texas State Play Day Tournament on Saturday, Oct. 21, at the Bobcat Tennis Complex.
Four Bobcats posted perfect records in the tournament.
Rishona Israel-Lewis,
Julia Navajo-Melendez,
Sofia Murcia-Rodriguez, and
Ana Perez posted 3-0 marks with one win in doubles and two in singles matches.
Alex Jones,
Andrea Fuchs and
Flavia Gutierrez-Balcazar all finished with 2-1 records at the tournament. Jones had a victory in doubles and split her two singles matches, while Fuchs and Gutierrez-Balcazar posted a pair of wins in singles play.
UTSA's Laura Cabrera was the overall tournament champion after winning all three of her matches and dropping just six games in a combined five sets at the tournament. Israel-Lewis finished in second place with seven lost games and Navajo-Melendez had a third-place finish with eight lost games.
Israel-Lewis teamed with Jones for a 6-1 victory over Zoe Kaffen and Caroline Kutach, who were playing as an independent. Then, she had a 6-4, 6-0 win over Mary Kaffen before defeating UTSA's Sonia Madronal by a score of 6-1, 6-1. Jones had a 6-4, 7-6 victory after winning a tiebreaker 7-5 in the second set against Ivana Ilic of UTSA.
Perez and Navajo-Melendez began their day combining to beat Denise Ibrahimovic and Ivana Ilic by a score of 7-5. Then, Perez won a 6-2, 6-2 match over Caroline Kutach and came back to post a 6-0, 6-0 victory over Canstanza Arenguiz of Prairie View A&M. Navajo-Melendez also had a 6-0, 6-2 win against Pauline Garcia and a 6-1, 6-0 triumph against Zoe Kaffen.
Murcia-Rodriguez also had a 3-0 record on Saturday after combining with
Joy Chia Ming Ming for a 6-2 doubles win over Shaddae Findley and Stacy Lackey of Prairie View A&M. She also had a 6-1, 6-2 win over Sara Brickner and a 6-2, 6-2 triumph over Tatiana Ruhl of Prairie View A&M.
Fuchs had singles wins over Findley by a score of 6-3, 6-2 and Hanna Rafferty by a score of 6-0, 6-1. Gutierrez-Balcazar's two victories came against Lackey by a score of 6-4, 6-4 and UTSA's Sophie Boers by a score of 4-6, 6-0, 1-0 (10-7).
Following Saturday's tournament, the Bobcats close out their fall schedule traveling to Miami, Fla., to compete in the FIU Invitational on Oct. 27-29. In addition to FIU and Texas State, Florida Atlantic, North Florida, and Drake will be playing at the tournament.
