SAN MARCOS, Texas – The Texas State women's soccer team hits the road for the first time in Sun Belt Conference play this weekend with games in Georgia and North Carolina. First up is a Friday night match up at 6 p.m. CDT against Appalachian State at the Appalachian Soccer Stadium. On Sunday, the Bobcats take on Georgia Southern at 12 p.m. CDT on Eagle Field.
Entering the weekend, Texas State has won three straight, is 5-4-1 overall and tied atop the conference standings at 2-0-0. The Mountaineers are 5-5-0 and 0-2-0 in league action while the Eagles sport a 3-5-1 overall mark and 0-2-0 in the SBC.
Last Time Out
Texas State opened conference play at home with a 1-0 overtime victory against Little Rock.
Lauren Prater tallied the lone score just over four minutes into extra time.
The Bobcats followed with a 3-1 win over Georgia State, scoring three unanswered goals after falling behind early in the first half.
Clarissa Leon knocked in the game-tying goal in the 25 minute.
Jordan Kondikoff netted the game-winning goal early in the 72 minute off a rebound and
Kassi Hormuth added an insurance goal a little over 11 minutes later.
Hormuth was selected as the SBC's Offensive Player of the Week for her performance in the two games. Along with her goal against the Panthers, she assisted on goals by Leon and Prater.
In goal for Texas State for both contests was
Heather Martin. The freshman made a career-high seven saves against the Trojans. She followed with a two-save performance in Sunday's match. Martin finished the first weekend of conference action with a 0.49 GAA, a .900 save percentage and nine stops. Her four wins this season has moved her up into a tie for ninth on the goalie's career wins list in program history.
Scouting Appalachian State
Appalachian State started SBC play with losses to Coastal Carolina and Troy, both 3-0 score lines. This year at home, the Mountaineers are 2-1 with wins over Maryland and Northern Kentucky. The lone defeat was a 2-1 decision to then 22nd-ranked Texas Tech.
Jane Cline leads the team and is second in the conference with six goals and 14 points. Erin Settle has knocked in three goals and Sarah Peatross has added two. Pacing the team with three assists is Jenn Bass.
Between the posts, Sam Steyl has started eight games. She has made 34 saves with a .694 save percentage and sports a 1.94 GAA having allowed 15 goals. Making three appearances with two starts is Taylor Ray. She has a 0.82 GAA with five saves and a .714 save percentage.
The all-time series between TXST and ASU is tied 1-1. The Mountaineers won last year's meeting 5-0 on their home turf. The Bobcats won the first matchup between the teams on Oct. 5, 2014 in
San Marcos by the score of 2-1 in overtime.
Scouting Georgia Southern
Georgia Southern has lost three straight including a 5-0 decision at South Alabama and a 2-1 game at UL Monroe last weekend. When playing at home the Eagles are 2-2-1 with wins over Charlotte and Kennesaw State. Before taking on TXST on Sunday, GS hosts UL Lafayette Friday night.
Both Melinda Lukas and Sarah Price have scored a team-high three goals. Price has been credited with two assists to lead the squad with eight points. Heading into the weekend with a team best four assists is Jennifer Wittick.
Lauren Karinshak has played in all nine games in goal, starting seven. She has a 1.99 GAA having allowed 16 goals and sports a .719 save percentage with 41 stops. Starting the other two games between the posts was Emily Flinn. For the year, she has surrendered seven goals for a 5.45 GAA in nearly 116 minutes on the field.
The Bobcats have a 1-0-1 lead in the all-time series with the Eagles. Last season saw TXST win 3-1 on Senior Day at home as Prater scored the game-winning goal in the 72nd minute and Leon added a score just over five minutes later. On Oct. 24, 2014, the teams played to a 1-1 draw in Statesboro, Georgia as the programs met for the first time ever.
