SAN MARCOS, Texas – The Texas State women's tennis team looks for its first win of the season when the Bobcats travel to Nacogdoches and plays a non-conference match against Stephen F. Austin at the Schlief Tennis Complex on Sunday morning at 11:00 a.m.
The Bobcats come into the match after suffering a 5-2 loss at New Mexico State last Sunday in Las Cruces. Texas State posted a pair of singles victories and won a doubles match against the Aggies.
Monica Pieratt and
Shannon Beckett won their first doubles match of the season after capturing a tiebreaker in their No. 3 match.
In singles play,
Ana Laura Gutierrez and
Katy Collins posted victories for Texas State's two points as a team. Gutierrez won her No. 2 singles match after winning a third-set tiebreaker, while Collins won her No. 6 singles match in three sets as well.
Pieratt opened the season playing in the No. 1 singles position, while
Pippa Carr and
Eva Dench were the No. 3 and No. 4 players for the Bobcats. In addition, Beckett played in the No. 5 spot.
In doubles play, Texas State used a lineup of Gutierrez and Carr playing in the No. 1 match and Collins joining Dench as the No. 2 team.
SCOUTING SFAStephen F. Austin will play a match against Maryland on Saturday before hosting the Bobcats on Sunday. The Lady Jacks are 2-1 heading into this weekend after defeating Midwestern State in Nacogdoches on Jan. 24 and splitting a pair of matches in Denton last weekend. SFA defeated Dallas Baptist by a score of 4-1 before dropping a 4-0 decision at North Texas.
Senior Malena Gordo, who enters this weekend with a 1-0 record in No. 1 singles matches, leads the Lady Jacks. Gordo also has teamed with Dhanielly Quevedo for a 2-1 record in No. 1 doubles. Vivienne Kulicke and Valeria Terentyeva also have a 2-1 mark in No. 3 doubles matches. Terentyeva has a 2-1 overall singles record that includes a 1-1 mark in No. 3 matches. Quevedo has won both of her singles matches this season with a 1-0 record in both No. 4 and No. 5 matches.
What's NextFollowing their match at SFA, the Bobcats will play four straight home matches at the Bobcat Tennis Complex beginning with a match against Incarnate Word on Sat., Feb. 14, at 10 a.m. Texas State also hosts South Alabama on Sunday morning at 11. The Bobcats will conclude their home stand with matches against UT-Pan America on Feb. 20 at 9:30 a.m., and Northwestern State on Feb. 21 at 11 a.m.
