Las Cruces, N. M. – After their first two matches of the season were canceled, the Texas State women's tennis team dropped a 5-2 decision against New Mexico State at the NMSU Tennis Center on Sunday.

Originally scheduled to play a pair of matches in El Paso against UTEP and Buffalo on Friday and Saturday, Texas State travelled to Las Cruces after both matches were cancelled due to rain.

The Bobcats began Sunday's match capturing a doubles victory as seniors
Shannon Beckett and
Monica Pieratt picked up right where they left off last season and won a 7-6 decision over Gabriella Joyce and Denise Van Der Ben. Beckett and Pieratt compiled a 9-7 record as a doubles team last year, and opened this season with their 10th victory as a doubles team.

New Mexico State captured the team doubles point after winning the other two matches.
Ana Laura Gutierrez and
Pippa Carr dropped a 6-4 decision against Ashvarya Shrivastava and Rimpledeen Kaur in the top-seeded match.

In the No. 2 match,
Katy Collins and
Eva Dench suffered a 6-2 loss against Susana Alcaraz and Erika Castillo Lopez.

Texas State's two team points came with victories by Gutierrez and Collins in their singles matches.

Gutierrez won a 6-2, 1-6, 7-6 decision over Alcaraz in the No. 2-seeded match. Collins also won her No. 6 match with a 7-5, 6-7, 7-5 victory over Mia Brandt.

Shrivastava won the No. 1-seeded match in straight sets with a 6-1, 6-3 victory over Pieratt. Carr also dropped a 6-2, 6-4 decision against Kaur in the No. 3 match, while Dench suffered a 7-6, 6-1 setback against Van Der Ben in the No. 4 match. Beckett also suffered a 6-4, 6-4 loss in the No. 5 match against Castillo Lopez.

Texas State will look for its first victory of the season when they play at Stephen F. Austin next Sunday, February 8, at 11 a.m. The Bobcats will play their first two home matches the following weekend at the Bobcat Tennis Complex. Texas State will host Incarnate Word on Feb. 14 and South Alabama on Feb. 15. The match against Incarnate Word begins at 10 a.m. and the South Alabama match starts at 11 a.m.
