EL PASO, Texas – The Texas State soccer team started the 2014 regular season with a 0-0 draw against the UTEP Miners on Friday evening. The Bobcats came out with determination as they set up many opportunities to threaten the Miner squad in front of over 1,000 fans.
"It was such a great atmosphere in El Paso tonight," stated head coach
Kat Conner. "They had a big tailgate and during the game the fans made it a very difficult place to play. I'm very proud of my team."
Texas State (0-0-1) was credited with five shots throughout the contest including two on goal in the first half.
"The players executed big time tonight for us to come out with a tie," stated Conner. "Along with execution, the athletes managed to maintain a balance of attack for the entirety of the contest. Their execution tonight proved that they have caught on with what we have been working on."
Caitlynn Rinehart recorded all 110 minutes in goal and of her two saves, the one in the second overtime period helped solidify the Bobcats confidence through the end of the game.
Tori Hale led the Bobcats with two shots while
Ali Jones,
Maddie Nichols, and
Chandler Cooney each recorded one.
In 14 seasons under the direction of Kevin Cross, the UTEP Miners are 12-1-1 with the lone loss and the tie belonging to the Bobcats.
The Bobcats will continue their opening season road trip on Sunday as they will take on WAC member New Mexico State at 2 p.m. CDT. Texas State has played against New Mexico State one time, in 2012, and came away with a 3-0 victory in San Marcos.
