2014 Media GuideSAN MARCOS, Texas -- The Texas State soccer team preps to open up the 2014 season against the UTEP Miners on Friday evening in El Paso, Texas. Kick-off for the Bobcats and the Miners is scheduled for 8 p.m. Central Time. Texas State will then travel up the road to Las Cruces, N.M. for a non-conference contest against WAC member New Mexico State on August 24. Kick-off for that match is scheduled for 2 p.m. Central Time.
Player To Watch: Kassi HormuthIn the exhibition game against Houston Baptist on August 16, the Bobcats pulled away with a 1-0 victory after freshman
Kassi Hormuth scored a goal in the 57th minute to put Texas State up top. Hormuth was one of two freshmen to earn the start for Texas State and is this week's player to watch.
"Kassi is a phenomenal attacking player," stated head coach
Kat Conner. "She gives us a great ability to score."
Hormuth's uplifting goal in the exhibition game was a memorable one as she found the back of the net on a corner kick by senior
Jourdan Brown. The Bobcats were the midst of maintaining control in the second half when Hormuth scored her goal.
"What gets Kassi on the field is her tenacity and work ethic, both offensively and defensively," mentioned Conner. "We've got other great freshmen, but what lifts Kassi over them right now is her ability to work on both sides of the ball."
A Look At The CompetitionUTEPThe UTEP soccer team kicks off its 19th season against the Bobcats. UTEP is 15-3 in season openers, including 12-1 under Cross. The lone defeat in a season opener under Cross was to Texas State back in 2004.
Sixteen out of the 24 active players are either freshman or sophomores on coach Kevin Cross' squad.
New Mexico StateAs a member of the WAC, the New Mexico State Aggies finished the 2013 season with a 5-13-2 overall record. Senior Layla Todd led the Aggies in points and goals last season with 11 and five, respectively.
Coach Conner QuotesWhat are your thoughts leading into the weekend?"After HBU and looking into UTEP, I think we have to play mentally faster. I think we physically played at the speed that we want too but mentally we have to make our decisions quicker, both offensively and defensively. That's the key of the game."
What is something the team needs to work on?"We're trying again to look to see if we can start to gain more attacking presence. I felt like we had some good chances, but again we didn't finish them and we have to get better at that."
