Softball Suffers Tough Loss To End 2014 Season

Box Score

LAFAYETTE, La. – The Texas State softball team saw its season come to a close on Wednesday afternoon, falling to the No. 8 seed UT Arlington in game one of the Sun Belt Conference Tournament by a score of 5-1. The Bobcats conclude the 2014 season with a 26-30 overall record.

The Mavericks made the game interesting right away, loading the bases with one out in the top of the first. Pitcher Ashley Wright worked her out of the jam, striking out the next batter before forcing a groundout to Kelli Baker at second.

Texas State made up for the Maverick scoring threat in the first, scoring Baker on a sacrifice fly by Coralee Ramirez. The Bobcats had the bases loaded after Baker hit a bloop single to shallow left, Timishia North reached on a fielder's choice and a Kortney Koroll walk.

Kendall Wiley attempted to continue the scoring for the Bobcats, but her hard hit ball to right center field was caught by Jasmine Tanksley on the run.

UTA answered in the top half of the second, putting together a back-to-back bunt single and double down the left field line to tie it up at one apiece.

After an eventful first and second innings, the Bobcats and the Mavericks proceeded to go scoreless through the next two, recording a combined two hits.

In the top of the fifth, however, the Maverick offense came alive as they recorded a pair of triples en route to scoring two to take a 3-1 lead over Texas State.

The Mavericks continue to extend their lead in the top of the sixth, scoring a pair of runs to take a 5-1 lead on the Bobcats. The inning started when Tanksley, who robbed Kendall Wiley of a hit in the bottom of the fifth, made her way to the bases on a Bobcat error. She was sent home after a double by lead-off hitter Britnea Barilli. Just two batters later, Nina Villanueva singled to right field, scoring Barilli for the second run of the inning.

Texas State recorded its first hit since the third in the bottom of the seventh inning, as Timishia North hit a ground ball that bounced off of the pitcher and to the shortstop, which could not make the play in time. Courtney Harris then hit a hard hit one-hopper to the shortstop, who got North out on a fielder's choice. With two outs and Harris on first, Koroll hit a pop fly to deep left field for the final out of the game.

The Bobcats finished the game with five hits while allowing seven by the Mavericks. Wright was handed the loss, falling to 3-6 on the year while striking out three.

Baker and Ramirez each finished the game going 1-for-2, while North, Harris, and Katie Doerre all recorded the other Bobcat hits.

The Bobcats finish the 2014 season on several top-five charts, including second in all-time team batting average with a mark of .271, second in home runs with 45, third in runs scored with 239, and fifth in total bases with 594.

Texas State looks to return 12 faces to the 2015 roster, including four every day starters from this year's squad.
