Bobcat Softball Upsets #3 Texas Tech

SAN MARCOS, Texas – Texas State upset #3 Texas Tech on Wednesday night in the programs highest-ranked win in recorded history in a 3-0 shutout over the Red Raiders.

Aiyana Coleman opened the scoring in the 4th inning with a solo home run, her 12th of the season. Her offense was helped by Maddy Azua's 20th win of the season in the shutout effort.

How it Happened:
Maddy Azua started in the circle, earning two strikeouts in a three-up, three-down first inning. She continued that momentum through the second inning with three groundouts in seven pitches to go through two scoreless frames. She would go on to pitch the complete game while allowing five hits and walking two batters, striking out four.

Texas State was able to get baserunners via walk in the second and third innings, but it took until the fourth to open the scoring. While Azua continued to limit baserunners, Aiyana Coleman hit a first pitch swinging home run back up the middle for her 12th home run of the season. The 244 foot shot to center ultimately would be the game winning run for the Bobcats.

Texas Tech piled on two hits in the 5th, but a ground out with the bases loaded got Azua out of a pinch thanks to defensive work that was present all night from the Bobcats.

Texas State added to its run total in the 5th after a leadoff double from Kate Bubela. She'd advance to third on a wild pitch, going on to score on a Megan Kelnar RBI single. From there, Kelnar advanced to second on a passed ball, going on to advance to third on Sydney Harvey's single. Mel Reeves would come in to pinch run, scoring on a throwing error.

Azua worked through the final two innings to limit baserunners for the Red Raiders, helped by impressive defensive work including a 163 double play in the top of the 7th. Azua called game on her own though, with a four pitch strikeout to end the game.

After today's 3-0 win, Texas State is now 29-16 on the season and stay at 9-6 in Sun Belt play.
