Softball Picks Up Doubleheader Sweep Over UTA

SAN MARCOS, Texas – With a lead-off home run in game one and five more hits throughout the afternoon, sophomore Kelli Baker led the Texas State Bobcats to a doubleheader sweep over the UT Arlington Mavericks on Saturday afternoon. The Bobcats won game one by a score of 5-2 and game two, 9-1.
 
With the victories, Texas State improves to 25-29 on the year and 8-12 in conference play.
 
Texas State got on the board early in game one, as Baker led off with a solo home run over the right field fence for her sixth of the season. With two outs and Timishia North standing on second, Coralee Ramirez hit a line drive double over the centerfielder's head to score the second run of the game.
 
The Bobcats scored one more in the bottom half of the first as Kendall Wiley hit a line drive double down the right field line, scoring Ramirez.
 
UTA answered with one run back in the top of the second as the Mavericks' Meagan Michele hit a solo home run to left field.
 
In the next half inning with North on first after her second straight walk, junior Courtney Harris was robbed of a home run by the Mavericks centerfielder for the third out of the inning. Jasmine Tanksley caught Harris' ball with her glove just over the top of the fence.
 
Texas State would score two more in the contest, one in the bottom of the fourth and one in the bottom of the sixth.
 
In the sixth, the Bobcats capitalized on a miscue by the Maverick catcher as she tried to pick Delia Saucedo off at first base. Saucedo ended at third, and promptly scored when Jordan Masek hit a sacrifice fly to left field.
 
Rayn House earned the win in game one, improving to 21-18 on the year while fanning nine UTA batters. Baker picked up her 13th multi-hit game of the year after hitting a home run in the first and a pair of singles in the fourth and sixth innings. The sophomore second baseman ended the game with a pair of RBI.
 
The Bobcats rattled off nine hits in game one while allowing just six.
 
Texas State continued to pick up where it left off in the second game, scoring two runs in the bottom of the first to take an early lead on the visiting Mavs. With Baker on second and Harris on first, junior Kortney Koroll hit a line drive double off the glove of Tanksley, scoring the two Bobcat base runners.
 
Baker continued to be an offensive threat for the Bobcats, recording her fifth hit of the day in the top of the second inning as she hit a line drive double to left center field, scoring Danielle Warne for the third Bobcat run of the game.
 
In the bottom of the fourth inning, the Bobcats put together four runs on three hits to give themselves a commanding 7-0 lead over UTA. Texas State's Katie Doerre, North, and Harris all recorded hits in the inning while the Bobcats capitalized on an error by the UTA shortstop.
 
UT Arlington threatened to score in the top of the fifth but failed to do so, stranding the bases loaded.
 
The Mavericks got a run back in the top of the sixth as Marisa Datko hit the second UTA home run of the day, cutting the Bobcat lead to six.
 
In the bottom of the sixth inning, the Bobcats put together three more hits to score two runs, including the walk-off hit by pinch hitter, Bianca Prado.
 
Ashley Wright earned the victory in game two, putting in six innings of work while striking out one. She allowed just four hits on the afternoon.
 
Baker finished the day going 6-for-7 while Doerre went 3-for-3 in game two. Harris tallied up three RBI in the second game and she hit a pair of doubles in the fourth and the sixth innings.
 
The Bobcats will take on the Mavericks in the final game of the series tomorrow afternoon with first pitch scheduled for 12 p.m. At the conclusion of the contest, the Bobcats will recognize its five seniors. Live stats, live audio, and live video will be available at txstatebobcats.com.
