Bobcats Drop to Bears, 4-3

Box Score

WACO, Texas – Texas State dropped a close game at Baylor Tuesday night, 4-3, to fall to 22-18 on the season, but will host the Bears in San Marcos Wednesday night.

The Bobcats tallied six hits in the game and received a good start from freshman pitcher Tyler Davenport. He struck out two batters, walked four and gave up five hits in four innings but only allowed one earned run and left the game with a 3-2 lead. Unfortunately Baylor runs in the sixth and seventh innings put the Bears ahead for the win.

After Baylor scored a run in the bottom of the first, the Bobcats answered with one of their own in the top of the second. With two outs, Tanner Hill sent a double down the left line to keep the inning alive. Trey Hicks followed with a double to right center to plate Hill and tie it, 1-1.

In the third inning, the Bobcats took advantage of three Baylor errors. First, Colby Targun reached on a fielder's choice, and then Garrett Mattlage knocked a hit straight up the middle. After that, the Baylor second baseman booted a ball from Granger Studdard, and Austin O'Neal knocked one down the left line past the third baseman to score two runners, pushing the Bobcat lead to 3-1.

An error on a failed pickoff attempt and a wild pitch allowed Baylor one run in the third, but Hicks, Taylor Bailey and O'Neal combined for a double play to end the inning before the Bears could get more. After two innings of scoreless baseball, Baylor tied it in the sixth. Outfielder Logan Brown knocked a single to get on base, and then, in a single play, stole second, advanced to third on a wild pitch and scored on an error to make it 3-3.

In the seventh, Baylor was able to take the lead. Third baseman Duncan Wendel dropped a pop up into no man's land in right field for a double. Pinch runner Lane Kelly went to third on a sacrifice bunt from catcher Matt Menard, and scored on a Texas State error for the 4-3 BU lead.

Studdard tried to keep Texas State alive in the eighth with a two-out double down the left line, but it would not be enough. In the ninth, the Bobcats went three up, three down to finish the game.

The Bobcats will look to bounce back against the Bears in the back half of the two-game series in San Marcos at 6:35 p.m. Wednesday. The game will be televised locally on KBVO and nationally on ESPN3.
