The Series Baylor holds a 46-18 advantage on Texas State in the all-time series, but the Bobcats won the last won. Texas State took a 3-0 victory against Baylor on April 16 last season, punctuated by a two-run homer from
Cody Lovejoy. Current student coach
Andrew Stumph also picked up an RBI in the game while
Kevin Sah scored twice. The pitching staff tallied 11 strikeouts to just three hits in the game. Texas State's last road win at Baylor was March 1, 2011. The teams split last season's two games with both home teams winning. Head Coach
Ty Harrington is 12-28 against the Bears.
On the BearsBaylor comes into the game off a win at Kansas State after dropping the first two games of the series. The Bears have struggled as of late, dropping eight of their last 11 games, getting swept by Texas and falling to Sam Houston State, twice to Dallas Baptist and twice to KSU.
The Bears have struggled at the plate this season, hitting just .224 with no Baylor player above .275. Duncan Wendel leads the crew at .275 followed by Adam Toth at .273. The duo have combined for 67 hits, 30 runs, 32 RBI and two homers. As a squad, Baylor has knocked 11 long balls on the season led by Darryn Sheppard and Grayson Porter with three apiece.
The pitching staff has a 3.76 ERA while Tuesday starter Drew Tolson owns a 6.20 ERA. As a group, the staff has struck out 227 batters and walked 141. Opponents are hitting .252 against Baylor, but an eye-popping .349 against Tolson.
On the BobcatsTexas State has a three-game winning streak coming into the two meetings against Baylor after a three-game sweep of Georgia State. The three victories gave Head Coach
Ty Harrington 499 on his career so he'll be looking for his landmark 500
th against the Bears.
The Bobcats sent two home runs out against GSU with
Austin O'Neal hitting his first of the year, a grand slam. Meanwhile, the pitching staff was outstanding against the top two home run hitters in the Sun Belt and one of the most powerful team offenses in the conference. The staff only gave up four runs to the crew, and the starting rotation looked outstanding.
Garrett Mattlage is currently leading the Bobcat bats at .313 on the season but he has company with one of the hottest bats on the squad,
Cory Geisler. Geisler is also at .313 but in the last 10 games he is hitting .483 with a .516 on-base percentage. He is also tied with
Matt Smith for the most runs scored (nine) in that time frame and tied with Mattlage for the most hits (14).
A Look AheadThe Bobcats faces a daunting task ahead of them after Baylor in Sun Belt leader UL Lafayette. The Ragin' Cajuns are ranked No. 2 nationally by the USA Today Coaches' Poll and No. 3 in at least three others. Texas State will play a three-game series at UL Lafayette this weekend.
