Western Kentucky Hands Softball A Pair Of Losses

SAN MARCOS, Texas – The Texas State softball team dropped a pair of games on Friday evening, falling in game one to Western Kentucky by a score of 1-0 and game two by a 6-1 margin. Senior Coralee Ramirez led the Bobcats at the plate, going 3-for-6 on the day including a triple in first game.
 
Kelli Baker claimed the first and only Bobcat run of the day, scoring in the bottom of the first inning of game two to take a 1-0 lead on the visiting Lady Toppers. Baker made her way to the base paths by drawing a walk, and proceeded to advance to second on a wild pitch and third on a sacrifice bunt by Timishia North. It was after North's sacrifice bunt that Baker crossed home plate on an illegal pitch by Heather Miniard.
 
The Bobcats' Kaylee Garner retired the first six batters Western Kentucky sent up to the plate and nine out of the first 11 as Texas State held on to its 1-0 lead through the third inning.
 
In the top of the fourth, Western Kentucky tied the game up at one apiece by taking advantage of a pair of singles and a walk issued by Garner.
 
Western Kentucky proceeded to score five more runs over the next three innings, continually building its lead against the Bobcats.
 
Texas State finished with six hits in game two while Western Kentucky recorded eight. After going hitless in game one versus the Lady Toppers, junior third baseman Courtney Harris finished going 2-for-4 in game two.
 
After six scoreless innings of action in game one, the Lady Toppers' Brooke Holloway broke the 0-0 tie with a solo shot over the left field fence.
 
Texas State attempted to counter the Lady Toppers run in the bottom of the seventh as senior Coralee Ramirez started the inning off with a line drive triple down the right field line. Ramirez stayed at third through the end of the game as Western Kentucky capitalized on getting outs with balls hit to the infield.
 
The best chance the Bobcats had of scoring was robbed for the second out when the Western Kentucky first baseman made a leaping catch of a line drive hit by Jordan Masek.
 
Texas State left eight batters stranded in game one while Western Kentucky stranded seven. The Bobcats outhit Western Kentucky five to four and committed no errors compared to one by the Lady Toppers.
 
Of the five hits by the Bobcats, Ramirez owned two of them. Baker, North, and Kendall Wiley tallied the other three Texas State hits.
 
Texas State falls to 21-26 overall and 4-10 in Sun Belt Conference play. Rayn House was handed the loss in game one, falling to 18-16 overall and Garner was credited with the loss in game two, falling to 1-6 on the year.
 
The Bobcats will return to the diamond tomorrow afternoon for a 12 p.m. first pitch in game three against Western Kentucky.
