Georgia State wins series, 3-0 ATLANTA – A seventh inning rally came up short on Sunday afternoon as the Texas State softball team fell in the series finale to Georgia State by a score of 3-2. The Bobcats fall to 21-24 on the year and 4-8 in conference play after the three-game sweep by the Panthers.
After allowing a run in the first inning by the Panthers, Texas State quickly answered the Panther run in the top of the second. Sophomore
Kendall Wiley hit her fifth home run of the season over the right center field fence to tie up the game at one apiece.
As the game progressed, Texas State worked its way out of jams in the second and fourth innings. The Georgia State offense put base runners as far as third base in each of those innings including an attempt at scoring in the second inning.
In the second, Georgia State's Morgan Brown hit a single to second baseman
Kelli Baker that resulted in the runners who were standing on second and third attempting to advance. As the play progressed,
Jordan Masek ultimately threw out MeQuilla Franklin out at home for the third out of the inning, halting the Panther's hopes of regaining the lead over the visiting Bobcats.
Texas State stranded three runners in the top of the third after the Georgia State pitching staff issued three walks.
In the bottom of the fifth inning, Georgia State took over the lead once again as Taylor Anderson hit her second home run of the series, making it a 2-1 ball game. The Panthers hit back-to-back singles after the home run, but the Bobcats caught a pair of pop-ups to the infield to get out of the inning.
With two outs in the top of the six and runners on first and second, senior
Coralee Ramirez hit a blooper to left centerfield, tying the ball game up at 2-2. The Bobcats recorded another single to load the bases, but failed to score anymore as Georgia State pitcher Kaitlyn Medlam struck out Masek for the final out of the inning.
Georgia State regained its lead in the bottom half of the sixth, tying together a pair of sac bunts and a pair of singles to take a 3-2 lead.
In another two out situation in the top of the seventh, Bobcat third baseman
Courtney Harris extended her hitting streak to nine with an infield single to the shortstop.
Kortney Koroll, the next batter to the plate, managed to get on first after a fielding error by the first baseman and Harris advanced to third, but that was as close as Texas State would come in its attempted rally.
Wiley finished the day going 2-for-4 while
Delia Saucedo and
Coralee Ramirez each went 1-for-3. The Bobcats stranded nine base runners on the day while recording six hits.
Rayn House fell to 18-15 overall after putting in six innings of work and striking out three.
