San Antonio, Texas – Despite a fast start, the Texas State women's tennis team dropped a 5-2 decision at I-35 rival UTSA on Monday afternoon at the UTSA Tennis Center.
 
The Bobcats jumped out to a 1-0 lead when they claimed the team doubles point after winning two of the three matches.
 
The day began with Shannon Beckett and Monica Pieratt defeating Daniela Garcia-Diaz and Alena Shichkova on the No. 2 court.
 
Then, Jessica Kahts and Ana Laura Gutierrez dropped the No. 1 match in a tiebreaker, 8-7, against Jacobea Junger and Miriam Rosell-Canudas.
 
However, Texas State claimed the team point when Katy Collins and Eva Dench fought off a pair of match points to beat Lina Hallgren and Isabelle Jonsson, 8-7, after winning the tiebreaker by the score of 7-4.
 
In singles action, Beckett was the lone Bobcat to win her match as she defeated Hallgren in straight sets by the score of 6-1, 6-3 on the No. 5 court.
 
The Roadrunners won their first point in the match when Rosell-Canudas won a 6-0, 6-0 decision over Pieratt in the No. 2 match.
 
UTSA also won the No. 3 match when Gutierrez fell 6-1, 6-1 against Jonsson. Then, Kahts fell a 6-3, 6-4 against Junger in the No. 1 match as the Roadrunners opened up a 3-1 edge.
 
Beckett won her match to pull Texas State to within 3-2. However, that was as close as the Bobcats could get as both Dench and Collins suffered three-set losses on the No. 4 and 6 courts.
 
Following the loss, Texas State fell to 8-7 overall this season. The Bobcats travel to SMU on Friday before playing Middle Tennessee State and UT Arlington on Saturday and Sunday in Arlington, Texas.
