The Series                                                                                                 Â
Texas State and Arkansas State have only met three times in their histories with the first coming in 2000. Head Coach
Ty Harrington has been at the helm for all three of the Bobcats' meetings against ASU, leading Texas State to a 3-1 record against the Red Wolves.
Â
The two most recent games were played at the UT Arlington/Hilton Invitational in 2009. The Bobcats dropped the first game, but bounced back to beat ASU, 3-2. The Red Wolves scored two runs in the fifth, but the Bobcats answered with one in each of the next three innings for the victory.
Â
Adding to the series, Harrington served as an assistant coach at Arkansas State from 1992-1994 before earning his first head coaching position at Northeast Texas Community College.
Â
On the Red Wolves
Like Texas State, ASU is entering the series coming off a loss in the midweek at Missouri State. Before that, however, the Red Wolves beat Memphis, took two of three at UT Arlington and swept in-state rival UALR in their conference series opener.
Â
On the bats, Lucas Feddersen leads the way for Arkansas State, batting .322 with 29 hits, 16 RBI and 14 runs scored this season. Just behind him is Stuart Levy at .321 with 26 hits, nine doubles and a triple. Austin Baker provides the power, knocking five of the team's six home runs this season with four triples and three doubles. He has tallied 29 hits to tie Feddersen for the team lead and has scored, by far, the most runs on the squad with 26.
Â
Zach George has started 10 games for the Red Wolves and he is batting .382 in limited at bats. Ty Michelotti is also above the .300 mark with 49 at bats for the team.
Â
The weekend trio of pitchers have a combined record of 7-6. Most of those wins come from usual Friday starter David Owen. He leads the starters in ERA at 2.97 and opponents are hitting .235 against him. The other two starters, Chandler Hawkins and Bradley Wallace, have given up a combined seven home runs of the team's 12 allowed.
Â
On the Bobcats
Texas State took two in a road series at Western Kentucky last weekend but fell to Texas, 5-1, in the midweek game. The Bobcats dropped Friday's game at WKU, but bounced back with two impressive victories to clinch the series and knocked three home runs in the series finale.
Â
Freshman
Granger Studdard leads all Bobcats with more than 51 at bats in batting average at .292.
Matt Smith, however, is batting .314 to lead the team. He seems to have taken over both second base and the leadoff position in the lineup.
Â
Garrett Mattlage leads the squad in hits with 25 and RBI with 21, including a career-best seven-RBI performance in last Saturday's game against the Hilltoppers.
Â
On the mound,
Austen Williams leads the weekend starters in ERA at 2.89. Both
Lucas Humpal and
Taylor Black are under 4.00 and the trio has combined for a 7-3 record with Williams and Humpal yet to take a loss.
Â
Cory Geisler has stood out recently coming out of the bullpen. In the last 10 games, he leads the staff in ERA (0.90), opposing batting average (.212), hits allowed (seven), runs allowed (two) and earned runs allowed (one).
Â
A Look Ahead
Texas State returns home after this weekend's series with a midweek game against UTSA, televised by KBVO, and another series in conference over the weekend against South Alabama.
