Â
SAN MARCOS, Texas – The Texas State softball team fell in a heartbreaker on Friday night, losing the first of a three-game series to the Texas Tech Red Raiders by a score of 3-2.
Â
Courtney Harris,
Jordan Masek, and
Coralee Ramirez led the Bobcats (18-13) with two hits each as Texas State outhit Texas Tech, 9-5, in the contest.
Â
The Bobcats hopped on the bases early in the contest as Texas State recorded two hits in the top half of the first inning while advancing runners as far as third base.
Timishia North recorded the first hit of the night with a bunt single to third base and Harris advanced
Kendall Wiley to third with a single past the second baseman.
Â
Texas Tech (25-9) answered with back-to-back singles to start the bottom of the first, but failed to move runners past second base due to the assistance of
Katie Doerre throwing the first base runner out at second on a stolen base attempt.
Â
The second and third innings proceeded to be silent from the batter's box, with only one hit between the two teams. Bobcat senior centerfielder
Coralee Ramirez recorded the lone hit in that span, singling to right center in the top of the second inning.
Â
Bobcat pitcher
Rayn House and the Texas State defense retired 10 straight batters over the course of the middle innings, capped by
Timishia North robbing Texas Tech's Cassie McClure of a home run to left field in the bottom of the fourth inning.
Â
Texas State started the top of the fifth inning off with back-to-back bunt singles by Masek and
Kelli Baker. North moved the runners around with a sacrifice bunt, and with two outs,
Courtney Harris hit a hard hit line drive single to the pitcher that knocked off Texas Tech pitcher Gretchen Aucoin's glove to score Masek who was standing on third base.
Â
The Bobcats attempted to add more in the top half of the fifth, but the Texas State runners got caught in a pair of run downs and as a result, Baker got thrown out at home.
Â
In the bottom of the sixth inning, the Red Raiders got the run back plus one to take over the lead. The first base runner of the inning found her way to the paths after being hit by House. Just two batters later, the Red Raider's McClure hit a line drive double down the left field line to score Sydnie Tapia who was standing on second after a pass ball.
Â
The Red Raiders second run of the inning came off the bat of Aucoin, scoring McClure with a single to right field.
Â
The Bobcats had an answer in the top of the seventh when freshman
Bianca Prado hit her third home run of the season to right center field to tie up the contest at two apiece. Ultimately, the Bobcats would strand Masek at second as the Red Raiders worked their way out of the seventh inning jam.
Â
After being charged with an error to start the inning, the Bobcats quickly found themselves in a hole in the bottom of the seventh inning as two out of the first three Red Raider batters found their way on the base paths. With two outs, House recorded a hit by pitch to load the bases before walking home the winning run.
Â
Along with outhitting the Red Raiders, Texas State left a total of seven runners on the bases while Texas Tech left just four. Prado's home run in the top of the seventh was the lone home run of the contest.
Â
The Bobcats will play game two against the Red Raiders at 4 p.m. tomorrow afternoon. The two squads will wrap up the three-game series on Sunday with a contest scheduled to begin at 12 p.m. Live stats can be found at txstatebobcats.com.
