Softball Drops Final Two Tournament Games

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

GULFPORT, Miss. – The Texas State softball team suffered a pair of setbacks on Sunday afternoon, first falling to former Southland Conference foe Nicholls State by a score of 6-2 before dropping the second to SEC member Mississippi State by a score of 2-1. The Bobcats finished the Gulf Coast Classic with a 2-3 record and fall to 13-8 overall as they return to San Marcos this week to take on Texas A&M.

Against Nicholls State, the Bobcats found their way into a hole halfway through the contest, allowing three runs in the top of the fourth to go down 4-0. Texas State earned one back, however, in the bottom half of that inning as Courtney Harris walked to start the inning and ultimately found her way around the base paths after a Coralee Ramirez double and a sac fly from Delia Saucedo.

The Bobcats recorded three of its hits in the first two innings including a triple by Kortney Koroll in the second, but were unable to convert due to the tight defense of the Coloniels.

After allowing two more by Nicholls State in the top of the fifth, the Bobcats went into the bottom of the seventh down 6-1.

The inning started with a single by Saucedo up the middle. With one out, Katie Doerre extended the inning with a walk and Kelli Baker promptly reached after a fielding error by the third baseman. Timishia North then stepped up to the plate with runners on first, second, and third and hit a single to the pitcher, scoring pinch runner Danielle Warne who was standing on third.

That proved to be the final hit of the game as the next two Bobcat batters struck out and lined out to end the game.

North finished game one going 2-for-4 with an RBI. Baker, Harris, Koroll, Ramirez, and Saucedo each recorded a hit for Texas State.

Texas State got the ball rolling early in game two, scoring a run in the top of the first, capitalizing on a pass ball and wild pitch by the Bulldog pitching staff after Baker started the game off with a single.

The Bulldogs answered in the bottom of the second, tying the ball game up at one a piece.

Game two proved to be a pitchers dual as there were only six hits allowed in the entire game, four of which, belonged to the Bobcats.

With two scoreless innings in the third and the fourth, the Bulldogs tacked on the final run of the contest after having three straight batters reach base without a hit and then an infield single to score the winning run.

North once again lead the Bobcats at the plate, going 2-for-3 in the game. Harris finished going 1-for-1 with two walks and Rayn House picked up her fourth loss of the season after pitching six innings while allowing just two hits.

Harris led the Bobcats throughout the week at the plate, hitting .462 with six hits and a home run. House finished the week with a 1.02 ERA while picking up her conference leading tenth victory of the season and 22 strikeouts.

Texas State returns home on Wednesday to play host to Texas A&M at 6 p.m. for a single game. Live stats, live video, and live radio will be available at txstatebobcats.com.
