Match Statistics
San Marcos, Texas- The Texas State women's tennis team won its second consecutive match and first match against a Sun Belt Conference opponent since joining the league in 2014, when the Bobcats posted a 7-0 shutout over UL Lafayette on Saturday at the Bobcat Tennis Complex.
Texas State began the day winning two of its three doubles matches to capture the team point.
Katy Collins and
Eva Dench opened the match with an 8-2 victory against Alexandra Way and Juliette Clement. UL Lafayette won the No. 2 match when Julie Cremers and Melissa Burckhartt edged
Monica Pieratt and
Shannon Beckett by the score of 8-4.
The Bobcats captured the team point when
Jessica Kahts teamed with
Ana Laura Gutierrez to edge Nelo Phiri and Nicole Breaux by a score of 8-6 in the No. 1 match.
In singles play, the first three matches were decided in straight sets as Beckett won the No. 3 match against Cremers by a score of 6-0, 6-2. Then, Kahts won her No. 1 match against Phiri by a score of 6-2, 6-0. Dench also won her No. 6 match against Clement by the score of 7-5, 6-2.
The final three matches featured at least one tiebreaker and two of them had two sets decided by tiebreakers. First, Pieratt dropped the first set of her No. 2 match against Breaux, 7-6, after losing the tiebreaker 7-0. However, she came back to win the second set by a score of 6-4 before winning the third set with a super tiebreaker by the score of 10-7.
Then, Collins won her No. 5 match against Way after winning a tiebreaker, 7-3, to capture the first set by a score of 7-6. In the second set, she trailed 4-1 before coming back to win the set and match by a score of 7-5.
The final match of the day between Gutierrez and Burckhartt was decided by tiebreakers in the final two sets after Gutierrez captured the first set by a score of 6-3. Burckhartt won the second set by a 7-6 score after winning the first tiebreaker by a score of 15-13. Then, Gutierrez captured the third set and the match when she won the super tiebreaker by a score of 11-9.
The victory evens Texas State's record to 2-2 this season. The Bobcats will play their next match next Saturday, Feb. 15, when they play host to UT Pan American at the Bobcat Tennis Complex at 11:00 a.m.
