Women's Tennis Records A 4-3 Win Over SFA

San Marcos, Texas – The Texas State women's tennis team edged former conference foe Stephen F. Austin 4-3 to win its fifth straight match at the Bobcat Tennis Center on Sunday afternoon.
 
Texas State opened the day by capturing the doubles team point before the two teams split the six singles matches. The Bobcats began the day with Katy Collins and Eva Dench winning the No. 3 doubles match over Denise Maxi and Andrea Ternera by a score of 8-2. Then, Shannon Beckett teamed with Monica Pieratt to defeat Rachel Pierce and Laura Service, 8-5, in the No. 2 match.
 
In singles play, Jessica Kahts continued her strong season when she overwhelmed Maxi in the No. 1 match with a 6-0, 6-3 victory.
 
 In the No. 4 match, Ana Laura Gutierrez spotted Julia Lorca a 2-1 lead before winning 11 of the next 12 points to capture a 6-2, 6-1 victory.
 
SFA came back to win the No. 2  and No. 5 matches as Malena Gordo won a 6-2, 6-3 decision over Pieratt in the No. 2 match, and Valeria Terentyeva beat Dench in three sets by the score of 3-6, 6-0, 6-1. Sunday's match marked the first time in her collegiate career that Dench has played in the No. 5 spot after beginning the season with a 4-1 record in No. 6 matches.
 
Beckett clinched the victory for the Bobcats when she won her second straight No. 4 match with a three-set victory over Kateryna Bugavenko. Beckett opened the match winning the first set by a score of 6-2 before dropping the second set by the same score. She came back to win the third set by a score of 6-3 after capturing four of the final five points in the set.
 
The final set of the day featured tiebreakers in two of the three sets as Katy Collins lost a three-set decision against Macarena Sedano-Acosta. Sedano-Acosta won the first set by a 7-6 score after winning the tiebreaker, 7-4. After Collins won the second set by a score of 7-4, Sedano-Acosta won the third-set tiebreaker by a score of 7-3.
 
The victory is Texas State's fifth straight win and improves the Bobcats' overall record to 5-2 this season, while Stephen F. Austin falls to 2-4 this season. Texas State plays its next six matches on the road before returning home to play a Sun Belt Conference match against Arkansas State on Mar. 26.
 
The Bobcats begin the road trip with a SBC match at ULM on Mar. 1 and at Northwestern State on Mar. 2. Texas State also plays at Rice on Mar. 8 before playing three matches in Alabama. The Bobcats play at UAB on Mar. 10, at Alabama State on Mar. 12 and at South Alabama in a SBC match on Mar. 13.
