Women's Basketball Falls To Red Wolves, 87-71

SAN MARCOS, Texas – In the second Sun Belt Conference game of the season, the Texas State women's basketball team fell to Arkansas State 87-71 at Strahan Coliseum. The Red Wolves overcame a five-point deficit at halftime to defeat the Bobcats Saturday afternoon.  
 
The Bobcats (4-9, 1-1 SBC) got off to a quick start in the first half, jumping out to a quick 9-0 run against the Red Wolves. In that run, the Bobcats went 4-for-6 from the floor and 1-2 from three-point range.
 
Texas State continued to maintain control of the game through the middle of the half, holding anywhere from a seven to 13 point lead over A-State (8-6, 2-0 SBC). The key player keeping the Red Wolves alive in the first half was Jessica Flanery  as she hit a career-high five three-pointers for A-State in the first half.
 
A-State's first real push of the ball game started with 9:15 remaining in the first half as it started to chip away at the Bobcat lead. In the six minutes following the start of the push, the Red Wolves went on a 16-6 run to tie up the game at 37-37. Texas State answered by finishing the first half on a 7-2 run, capped by a pair of free throws by Ayriel Anderson.
 
The Bobcats finished the first half shooting a season-high 55.2 percent from the floor while the Red Wolves shot 57.7 percent. The biggest difference in the first half was the fact that Texas State committed just seven turnovers to A-State's 12 and made seven more baskets from the charity stripe.
 
Despite scoring the first basket of the second half to go up by seven, roles switched between the Bobcats and the Red Wolves as A-State proceeded to outscore Texas State 48-27 for the entirety of the second half. The Red Wolves defense put a stop to Texas State's sharp shooting in the first half by holding the Bobcats to just 29.0 percent from the floor.
 
Along with stifling the Bobcats offense, the Red Wolves picked up play on their end of the court. A-State shot 58.3 percent from the floor in the second half, leading to a season-high 58.0 percent for the game. The Red Wolves also made a season-high 12 three-pointers en route to defeating the Bobcats.
 
Several Bobcats set career-highs in the set back. Anderson finished the game with a career-high nine assists, eight of which, occurred in the first half. Senior Kaylan Martin recorded a career-high seven steals, topping her previous total of five set back against Houston on Dec. 22, 2012. Her previous season-high of four occurred on Thursday against UALR. Meghan Braeuer recorded a career-high 10 points for the afternoon.
 
Four Bobcats finished the game with double-digit points, led by Erin Peoples with a season-high 17. Martin also recorded a season-high 15 points along with teammate Ashley Ezeh.
 
The Bobcats will now hit the road to take on Louisiana on Wednesday evening before traveling to ULM Saturday. Tip-off in Lafayette, La. is scheduled for 7 p.m. Live stats will be made available at txstatebobcats.com and you can tune in at 89.9 FM KTSW for a live play-by-play of the game.
