2013-14 Schedule
San Marcos, Texas - The Texas State men's basketball team announced its 2013-14 schedule today. The schedule will feature 15 home games, 13 away games and a Thanksgiving tournament played in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico.
"This is a very challenging and tough schedule for us," head coach Danny Kaspar said. "Road games to Texas, Utah, Houston, Oral Roberts and SMU give us one of the toughest non-conference schedules in the Sun Belt. We hope to compete in every game and pull out a few wins in the process. At the very least we'll know about ourselves heading into conference play"
Texas State opens the home slate with an exhibition game on Nov. 4, against Sul Ross State, giving fans their first opportunity to see new head coach Danny Kaspar lead the team. The Bobcats will play the first regular season home game, against Kaspar's old team, Stephen F. Austin, on Tuesday, Nov. 12. Other non conference home games include South Dakota (Nov. 25), Cedarville University (Dec. 4), UT-Tyler (Dec. 21) and LIU-Brooklyn (Dec. 30).
The road sets up to be a difficult one in nonconference as the Bobcats will travel to teams from prestigious leagues such as The American Athletic Conference, the Big 12 and the Pac 12. The season opener comes against Houston on Friday, Nov. 8. A week later, the Bobcats travel to Oral Roberts (Nov. 16) before heading to Dallas to face Hall of Fame coach Larry Brown and SMU on Nov. 20. The Bobcats will face a difficult test out of finals, with Texas on Dec. 14 and Utah on Dec. 19.
Texas State's highlight road trip of the year comes around Thanksgiving, as the team will play in the 2013 Cure UCD Classic by Plan BC3, in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico. The Bobcats will play three straight days (Nov. 29-Dec. 1) against Tulane, Northern Kentucky and Southeast Missouri.
A unique change for Bobcat fans this year will be the doubleheader format on Saturdays during Sun Belt play. For Saturday home games during league play, the Bobcat women will play at 2:00 p.m., before the men play at 4:30 on Jan. 4, Jan. 25, Feb. 8 and March 1. During midweek games, the women will play on Wednesday nights and the men will play Thursdays, with the exception of Jan. 2, the first conference game of the year.
The Sun Belt conference will be a powerful league, as six teams last season posted 17 wins or more. Western Kentucky is the leading winning team returning, as it went 20-16 a year ago and advanced to the NCAA Tournament. The Bobcats will get the Hilltoppers on Feb. 1 in Bowling Green and Feb. 27 at Strahan.
Overall, the conference schedule includes 18 games, culminating with the top eight teams going to the Sun Belt Tournament in New Orleans, March 13-16.
