Logan, Utah – Texas State softball held off Utah State this afternoon to come away with the sweep at Johnson Stadium. The Bobcats captured game one, 14-0 in five innings, and then recorded a 9-8 victory in game two.
Game 1
Texas State got its bats moving pretty quickly in the first inning, as it jumped out to a 3-0 lead at Utah State. Kelli Baker scored the Bobcats' first run of the day on a fielding error by the Aggie shortstop to give Texas State a 1-0 lead. Two batters later, Courtney Harris recorded a two-run home run when she hit the ball over the left field fence. The homer was the fourth of Harris' career.
Baker scored her second run of the game when she advanced home on a wild pitch in the top of the second inning. The run gave Texas State a 4-0 lead.
The Bobcats added to their run total in the top of the third inning when Anna Hernandez scored on a fielder's choice, followed by a bases loaded walk by Jordan Masek that scored Timishia North.
Texas State continued to take command of the game, and in the fourth inning an RBI single by Macie Hair pushed Harris home, followed by a two-run triple by Brooke Baker to left center.
The Bobcats held a 9-0 advantage heading into the fifth inning, but they wouldn't stop at nine runs. Texas State tallied six hits in the fifth inning to aid in a five-run performance and a 14-0 win.
Utah State managed two hits in the game, as it fell to Texas State in game one of the doubleheader.
Texas State registered a season-high 14 runs, in addition to 15 hits to earn the win at Utah State, and a trip to the WAC Tournament. The Bobcats tallied at least one hit and one run in every inning.
Hernandez finished 4-for-4 from the plate with one run scored. Hair, Ramirez and K. Baker recorded a pair of hits each.
Rayn House (7-16), pitched a complete-game with one strikeout. House allowed two hits in 5.0 innings in the circle. Noelle Johnson (3-17) was handed the loss. Johnson had three strikeouts in 3.2 innings pitched.
Game 2
It was senior Haley Lemons who got things started for Texas State in game two. Lemons hit a two-out triple to centerfield for the Cats first hit of the game, followed by an RBI single to right center by Courtney Harris to give Texas State a 1-0 edge.
Texas State didn't score a run in the second, but it made up for it with five runs in the third inning to take a 6-0 lead. The Bobcats were walked four times in the inning, in addition to recording three hits.
The fifth inning provided another run for Texas State, as Brooke Baker scored on an RBI single by Lemons for the seventh run of the game. The eighth and final run of the game came on a bases loaded walk by Coralee Ramirez that scored Kelli Baker.
Utah State came back in the fifth inning to record six runs off six hits to come to within two runs of Texas State. The Aggies followed it up with two more runs in the sixth inning to tie the game at 8-All.
The Bobcats were able to break the tie when Lemons scored on an error by the Aggie shortstop to give Texas State a 9-8 edge and the gamewinning run.
The Aggies outhit Texas State, 12 to 9. Lemons finished 2-for-3 from the plate with three runs scored to lead the Bobcats.
Ashley Wright (7-13) earned the win in the circle after 6.1 innings pitched. She fanned two batters and allowed three earned runs during her stint. Shelbi Tyteca was hit with the loss after 3.1 innings in the circle.
Texas State and Utah State will close out the conference regular season with a single game tomorrow. First pitch is slated for 5 p.m. CT.
