Head Coach
Dana Boone took home both the men's and women's WAC Outdoor Coach of the Year awards to make it three WAC awards after being named the women's WAC Indoor Coach of the Year.
Seniors
Kelsey Titzman and
Timothy Young were also recognized. Titzman, who was the women's Indoor Field Athlete of the Year, also took home the women's Outdoor Field Athlete of the Year award. She won the shot put while finishing third in the discus. Meanwhile, Young was the high point scorer for the men, finishing with 36 points, 11 more than second place. He medaled in all four events he attempted and won the 110-meter hurdles and 100-meter dash. In third place on the men's individual scoring list was
Darian Brown as he scored 22 points. While he didn't earn the high point award, he was recognized as the WAC's Outdoor Field Athlete of the Year.
The women jumped out to an early start at the meet behind the outstanding record-breaking performance by
Danessa Lyssy in the heptathlon and never looked back on their way to 13 medals, four of which were gold:
Leslie Ables in pole vault (3.81m; 12-6), Lyssy in the heptathlon (5,522 points), Titzman in shot put (16.23m; 53-3) and
Jalisa Hall in hammer throw (58.27m; 191-02).
Texas State's men had to come from behind to win, and they did late. Young medaled in the 200-meter dash, finishing third with a personal best time of 20.90. That set up the discus squad to put the Bobcats ahead. Brown and company finished first, second, fourth and eighth to total 24 points for the team.
Kole Knutson finished second while
Jordan Huckaby took fourth.
Roman Rodriguez finished eighth.
The meet came down to the final event, the men's 4x400-meter relay. Texas State had to beat Utah State and UT Arlington to complete the sweep. The Bobcats blew them away.
James Hillard,
Reggie Reed,
William Murray and
Anthony Johnson took second with a time of 3:10.99 while Utah State and UTA finished sixth and seventh respectively with times slower than 3:15.00.
The men won three gold medals. Brown won the discus and Young won the 110m hurdles and 100m with a personal record in the hurdles (13.94). Young set three personal records on the weekend with the other two coming in the 200m (20.90) and the long jump (7.48m; 24-6.5).
In addition to bringing home two brand new championships, some Bobcats also put up impressive numbers that could lead to a berth in the NCAA Preliminary Championships. Stay tuned to
