Softball Ends Season After a Comeback Performance at the WAC Tourney Falls Short

Ruston, La.– No. 4 Texas State attempted to win three games in one day in order to advance to the Western Athletic Conference Softball Championship. The Bobcats were able to knock of No. 3 Louisiana Tech in their first game, followed by a victory over No. 6 UT Arlington in game two. Unfortunately, Texas State fell to No. 2 New Mexico State 3-1 in its final game.

Texas State left two runners on base in the first-two innings, while the Aggies failed to have any runners reach base. It was a sacrifice fly by Kristi Covarrubia to centerfield in the top of the third inning that gave New Mexico State a 1-0 lead and the first run of the game. The Aggies added to their run total when Kelsey Dodd hit a solo homer to right field in the fourth inning.

New Mexico State tallied its third run of the game when Staci Rodriguez registered a sacrifice fly to left field in the fifth inning.

The sixth inning saw the Bobcats' offense come together as Kelli Baker, Brooke Baker, and Haley Lemons recorded back-to-back-to-back singles to load the bases. K. Baker was able to score on a wild pitch by Alex Newman to give Texas State its first run of the game. The Bobcats ended up stranding a pair of runners on base, as they trailed by two runs going into the final inning.

Texas State was unable to garner any base runners in the final inning, as it fell to New Mexico State by two runs, ending its run in the tournament.

B. Baker finished 2-for-3 at the plate, while four other Bobcats recorded one hit each. Four Aggies tallied one hit apiece.

Ashley Wright (9-15) started the game for Texas State and pitched 3.1 innings in the loss. Rayn House pitched the rest of the game for the Bobcats with one strikeout. Newman (24-13) earned the win for New Mexico State. She fanned three batters during her time in the circle.

The Bobcats finished the WAC Tourney with a 2-2 record, after losing their first game of the tourney in the double elimination format.

Texas State ends the season with an overall record of 18-38. The Bobcats had six seniors on its roster – Brooke Baker, Haley Lemons, Anna Hernandez, Macie Hair, Shelby Carnline, and Anne Marie Taylor.
